Abstract

Treatment plant (1), partic. for waste water contg. nitrates and phosphates has an outer cylindrical wall (2) and three concentrically located cylindrical or elliptical treatment tanks bounded by three inner walls (3,4,5). The outer ring -section tank or reservoir (6) formed by the outer wall (2) and first inner wall (3) is the anaerobic reservoir. The second reservoir serves as the contact or mixing reservoir (7), and the space between the two inner walls (4,5) as the anoxic reservoir (8). The third inner wall (5) encloses a cylindrical space or settlement reservoir (9). Waste water enters the receiving reservoir (10) and passes through openings (11) into the anaerobic reservoir (6) where it is treated by anoxic sludge to release the phosphates present. The sludge produced separates from the phosphate-rich water which is prevented from circulating around the tank by baffles (12) which extend to about one third the depth of the tank. This assists the sludge in the water to settle out more easily. The sludge which settles into the base of the tank can circulate beneath the baffle (12). The phosphate-rich water in the upper part of the reservoir (6) is pumped to the inner settlement tank (9) where it is treated by the addn. of chemicals. The anoxic sludge passes to the mixing or contact reservoir (7) where recirculated sludge is added. Nitrates are removed in the following anoxic reservoir (8) by means of a redn. process.
