Abstract

A method for evaluating the physical strength of aerobic granular sludge comprising, preparing sludge granule samples containing a predetermined number of granules with a specified particle diameter, measuring the total dry weight of said sludge granules in samples, determining the average diameter of said sludge granules in samples, diluting a sample with water, subjecting the diluted sample to shear stress by stirring for a given time under a given stirrer speed, collecting and sieving the stirred sample using a sieve to retain particles above said specified particle diameter, determining the dry weight of sludge residuals in the sieved samples, determining the average diameter of said sludge granules from said stirred samples and estimating the strength of the aerobic granular sludge using the formulae; S = ( X' / X ) ? 100 (%) where S = Stability Coefficient (%), X' = Total dry weight of aerobic granular sludge residual (gTSSL-1) X = Total dry weight of aerobic granular sludge (gTSSL-1) and ? = ( A ?
