Abstract

A METHOD OF INSTALLING A PRE-FOUNDED COLUMN, COMPRISING THE STEPS OF: CASTING A CONCRETE BORED PILE (3) IN A HOLE (2) IN THE GROUND, SO THAT THE TOP END OF THE PILE (3) IS BELOW GROUND LEVEL (GL); AND SECURING A COLUMN (4) TO THE TOP END OF THE PILE (3), AFTER THE CONCRETE OF THE PILE HAS SET.PREFERABLY, A HOLLOW SLEEVE (40) OF A DIAMETER LARGER THAN THE DIAMETER OF THE PILE (3) IS PROVIDED BETWEEN THE TOP OF THE PILE (3) AND THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND, THE CENTRELINE OF THE SLEEVE (40) BEING COINCIDENT WITH THE CENTRELINE OF THE PILE (3).THE PROVISION OF THIS LARGE DIAMETER SLEEVE (40) GIVES ACCESS TO THE TOP OF THE PILE SO THAT THE COLUMN (4) MAY BE SECURED TO THE TOP OF THE PILE (3) WHILST UNDER CONSTANT SUPERVISION BY WORKMEN SITUATED AT THE LEVEL AT THE TOP OF THE PILE (3).THE ABOVE METHOD OF INSTALLING A PREFOUNDED COLUMN (4) MAY BE INCORPORATED INTO A METHOD OF CONSTRUCTING A BASEMENT KNOWN AS THE "TOP-DOWN" METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION. IN THIS METHOD, CONCRETE PILES (3) ARE PLACED WELL BELOW GROUND LEVEL (GL) AND A COLUMN (4) IS SECURED TO EACH PILE (3) AFTER THE CONCRETE OF THE PILES (3) HAS SET. THE "TOP-DOWN" METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION HAS THE ADVANTAGE THAT ONCE THE PREFOUNDED COLUMNS (4) ARE INSTALLED, SIMULTANEOUS CONSTRUCTION OF THE BASEMENT SPACE AND THE UPPER FLOORS (14, 16, 18) OF THE BUILDING MAY TAKE PLACE.(FIG 3E)
