A SOUND ATTENUATOR FOR ATTENUATING SOUND IN ACOUSTIC ROOMS IS PROPOSED. THE SOUND ATTENUATOR (1) ACCORDING TO THE INVENTION COMPRISES DISPOSED ON A WALL OR CEILING OF A ROOM TO BE ATTENUATED A FRAME-SHAPED SPACER ELEMENT (2) INCLUDING A PLATE ABSORBER (3) DISPOSED ON THE SPACER ELEMENT (2) AND ENCLOSING TOGETHER WITH THE WALL (6) A CAVITY (5). ON THE PLATE ABSORBER (3) A POROUS ABSORBER (4) IS DISPOSED. THE SOUND ATTENUATOR ACCORDING TO THE INVENTION ATTENUATES SOUND OVER A WIDEBAND RANGE OF FREQUENCIES AND IS SUITABLE DUE TO ITS FLAT CONFIGURATION PARTICULARLY FOR USE IN WIND TUNNEL SYSTEMS(FIG. 1)
