Advantageously, the full sealing metal band 12 may be placed in a particular door opening 6 which is preformed in a closed cycle as shown in 46 in Figure 6. The shape of the carrier 22 shown in Figure 3 or 5 is particularly advantageous for use in a sealing metal band to be provided in a closed cycle, as shown in Figure 6. This is due to the arrangement of the slots 30, 32, 34 and 36, although it allows the necessary bend (as will be explained in more detail below with reference to Figures 7 and 8), however it ensures that the carrier remains relatively rigid. In particular, the carrier is relatively rigid as compared to the previous forms of carrier in which the slots are more extensive so that the carrier effectively comprises a series of inverted U-shaped elements arranged side by side to define the channel and with their lengths connected by means of short connecting links. Such a carrier, although satisfactory for some applications, is very flexible. The closed cycle metal band forms formed with such prior carrier types are thus very flexible and very difficult to handle to fit or position. In contrast, it has been found that the use of slots 32 and 34 of different lengths is, in the carrier of Figure 3 or Figure 5, advantageous for increasing the stiffness of the closed cycle. It was found that if these grooves have the same length, the closed cycle 46 (Figure 6) is less able to retain its shape during assembly by the setter on the flange 10, making this assembly process much more difficult. Although the metal band has been illustrated in the form of a door seal, it could also be incorporated as a seal for a vehicle luggage compartment. In this case, the sealing portion 16 could be mounted to run along the outer side of the base of the holding portion 14 instead of along one of its sides. The advantages arising from the arrangement of the slots in the carrier 22 are illustrated in greater detail in Figures 7 and 8. Figures 7 and 8 illustrate different forms of folding which the metal band 12, and thus the carrier 22 , they have to experiment in use. Only one of the side walls 26, 28 needs to be modified from this way if desired. Figure 10 shows a modification in which the carrier is formed with additional saw cuts 50 along a region 52 where the carrier bends to follow a curve of the type shown in Figure 7. Each cut 50 is aligned with a slot 32 or 34 (see Figure 4 6 5) and joins that slot to the free edge of the respective side wall 26, 28.
