Abstract

La invencion se relaciona con el uso de materiales de espuma poliméricos para el aislamiento. Estas espumas poliméricas son preparadas mediante la polimerizacion de ciertas emulsiones de agua en aceite que tiene una relacion de la fase agua a la fase de aceite relativamente elevada, comunmente conocidas en la técnia como "HIPE". Los materiales de espuma derivados de HIPE utilizados en la presente invencion comprenden una estructura de espuma polimérica de celdas abiertas interconectadas, generalmente hidrofobica, flexible, semiflexible o rígida, no ionica. Estas estructuras de espuma tienen: A) una área superficial específica por volumen de espuma de por lo menos aproximadamente 0.01 m²/cmü, B) una densidad de menos de 0.05 g/ücm, aproximadamente, y C) una temperatura de transicion vítrea (Tg) de entre aproximadamente -20 degree y 90 degree C. Las espumas pueden ser utilizadas como materiales de aislamiento térmico, acustico y/o mecánico. En una modalidad preferida, las espumas utilizadas pueden ser preparadas, empacadas y embarcadas en un estado comprimido, de alta densidad, y retornarán al ocurri la activacion (por ejemplo, por calor) a la densidad original de la espuma.
