Abstract

Se describe un método para disminuir el contenido de fierro del carbonato de calcio; el método incluye la adicion de un agente quelatador de fierro a una suspension acuosa de carbonato de calcio, reducir el pH de la suspension acuosa de carbonato de calcio empleando un gas que contenga dioxido de carbono, manteniendo a la vez la suspension acuosa de carbonato de calcio a una temperatura elevada; la suspension es agitada, filtrada, lavada y secada; el producto de carbonato de calcio que resulta del procedimiento de la presente invencion tiene un contenido de fierro reducido; el carbonato de calcio producido de acuerdo con el método de esta invencion es particularmente adecuado para usarse como un aditivo alimenticio o farmacéutico y también puede ser util como un rellenador en procedimientos de fabricacion de papel o como aditivo en productos de plástico.
