Abstract
La presente descripción se refiere a partículas que comprenden almidón de carboxialquilo que se encuentran permeadas con un gas ácido y a sus usos como materiales absorbentes. Se descubrió que pueden obtenerse materiales superabsorbentes a partir de partículas de almidón de carboxialquilo permeadas con el gas ácido y calentadas a una temperatura de al menos 100°C hasta que alcancen un AUL (Absorbencia Bajo Carga) a 0.7 psi de al menos 14 g/g y un CRC (Capacidad Centrífuga de Retención) de al menos 18 g/g. Además se descubrió que el pH de los extruidos de almidón alcalino puede ajustarse al permear las partículas del extruido con el gas ácido aún con tratamiento de las partículas a temperaturas menores a 100°C. Las partículas de almidón de carboxialquilo obtenidas por los métodos descritos en la presente se caracterizan por tener enlaces éster intramoleculares, que son mayores en número en la superficie de la partícula que en el núcleo, y las partículas tienen una mayor concentración de cationes del gas ácido en la superficie que en el núcleo.
