Abstract

La presente invención se refiere a la producción de un aceite de triacilglicerol que se produce a partir de la especie de alga Pythium. En una modalidad, la especie de alga contienen al menos aproximadamente 20 por ciento por peso de lípidos totales y contiene al menos aproximadamente 10 por ciento por peso de sus ácidos grasos totales como ácido eicosapentaenoico (EPA) y menos de aproximadamente 5 por ciento por peso de sus ácidos grasos totales como ácido araquidónico (ARA). En otra modalidad, la presente invención se refiere a varios métodos para producir ácido eicosapentaenoico (EPA) a partir de la especie de alga Pythium. En particular, Pythium irregulare puede utilizarse como un organismo de producción viable.
