Abstract
La presente invención se refiere a un metodo metalotermico, no electrolítico, para reducir óxido de tierra rara a metal de tierra rara, que consiste en que: la reducción ocurre en un baño de sal fundido compuesto predominantemente de cloruro de calcio, se dispersa en el baño un volumen de tierra rara que es menor que el volumen del baño de sal, se agrega al baño un exceso estequiometrico de metal de calcio con respecto a la cantidad del ion de metal de tierra rara presente; y se agita el baño hasta que se reduzca el óxido a metal de tierra rara, de acuerdo con la fórmula. en donde RE representa uno o más elementos de tierra rara, que tienen una valencia de 2, 3 ó 4, 0 representa oxígeno, Ca representa calcio, CAO representa óxido de calcio, y n y m son enteros tales que la valencia del elemento de tierra rara multiplicando por n sea igual a la valencia de oxígeno multiplicando por m.
