Abstract

1441743 Moulding powder coatings IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 July 1973 [24 Aug 1972] 39411/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division B2] A thermoplastics lace is modified as shown in Fig. 1 by passing the lace 10 the surface of which is tacky over a tray 12 containing a fluidized bed of powdered polymer 13 while a current of air is passed through nozzle 14 situated in the bed so that powder is caused to adhere to the surface of the lace, then through hot tube 16 to melt the coating and through a die 17 to produce a uniform coating. The lace may be produced by impregnating glass fibre roving with thermoplastic powder, heating to melt the thermoplastic and drawing the roving through die 11 and the lace is then modified as above whilst its temperature is sufficiently high for its surface to be tacky. Alternatively (Fig. 2, not shown) the lace may be produced by a screw extruder process, cooled after leaving the die of the extruder in a water bath and then passed through a small heater to render the surface tacky.
