Abstract
A process for the production of urea comprises synthesizing a urea soln. from ammonia and carbon dioxide (the mole ratio is 5:1-8:1) and decomposing the ammonium carbamate contained in the urea soln. in two stages. In the first decomposition stage, ammonia is used as a self- stripping agent at a pressure of 180 to 250 bars, which is the same or substantially the same as in the synthesis. In the second decomposition, carbon dioxide is used as an external stripping agent and the pressure is 30 to 50 bars, less than the pressure at which the first decomposition stage was carried out.
