Abstract

Description
본 발명은 반투과성 멤브레인 (semi-permeable membranes), 좀 더 상세하게는 담수화 및 기타 프로세스를 위한 나노다공성 멤브레인 (nanoporous membranes) 과 이에 관한 제조와 사용 방법에 관한 것이다.
물의 담수화는 두 가지 방법 (approach) 의 관점에서 생각해 볼 수 있다. 물의 담수화를 위한 두 가지 기본적 방법은 역삼투 (reverse osmosis) 와 증류 (distillation) 를 포함한다. 증류 방법은 유체상태의 물을 증기단계로 변환하고, 수증기로부터 물을 응축하는 것을 요구한다. 이 방법은 매우 고비용이고 상당한 에너지 사용을 필요로 한다. 역삼투 방법은 소금기가 있는 액체 (salinated liquid) 에 압력을 가해 반투과성 멤브레인을 통해 물분자를 강제로 통과 (force) 시킨다. 이 방법은 비교적 에너지 소비수준이 낮다.
역삼투를 이용한 담수화에 필요한 특정 에너지는 (생산되는 식수단위당) 1980년대에 10kWh/m3이상에서 4kWh/m3이하로 감소되었으며, 이론상 최소필요에너지인 0.7 kWh/m3에 근접하고 있다. 최근 역삼투 방법의 개선을 위하여, 새로운 멤브레인은 균일한 기공분포 (uniform pore distribution) 와 좀 더 투과성이 높은 분리층 (a more permeable separation layer) 을 갖는데, 이것은 역삼투 방식에서 유량 (flux) 을 증가시키면서 잠재적으로 염분제거를 유지하거나 개선할 수 있다. 효과적인 담수화를 위한 멤브레인의 기공크기는 10 나노미터 (nm) 혹은 그 이하의 크기이다. 이 정도의 크기들을 현재의 프로세스로 달성하려면 다소 복잡하고, 고비용이며 시간이 많이 소요된다. 한 방법에서 상업적으로 이용 가능한 양극산화된 알루미늄 산화물 필름들 (anodized aluminum oxide films) 을 채용하는데, 이것은 10에서 200 나노미터 혹은 그 이상의 직경의 나노채널들 (nanochannels) 의 병렬 어레이들 (parallel arrays) 을 갖는다. 기공크기를 좁히기 위해서 (narrow), 표면 하전된 재료들 (surface charged materials) 을 화학적 기상 증착, 원자층 증착 혹은 물리적 기상 증착에 의해 나노채널의 구멍들 (openings) 에 배치한다 (deposited). 다른 방법으로는, 산화물 층을 원자층 증착에 의해서 구멍 입구 (inlet opening) 에 형성한다. 원하는 두께와 기공직경을 얻기 위하여 여러 번의 시도 (multiple passes) 가 필요하다. 담수화에 적합한 원하는 직경을 얻기 위한 이러한 과정은 시간이 많이 소요되고 복잡하고 상대적으로 고비용이다. 게다가, 현재의 프로세스들은 나노채널의 구멍 입구를 단지 좁게 (narrow) 만 할 수 있다.
따라서, 생산 프로세스가 효율적이고 또한 경제적으로도 실용적이면서, 10 나노미터이하의 구멍들을 갖는 개선된 멤브레인을 위한 기술이 필요하다.
필터, 필터 시스템 그리고 필터용 나노다공성 멤브레인들을 제조하는 방법이 이하 기술된다. 한 실시예에서, 필터는 내부에 형성된 복수의 나노채널들을 갖는 다공성 멤브레인 - 상기 나노채널들은 산화물 표면을 포함하고 제 1직경을 가짐 - 및 기능화된 (functionalized) 나노입자들의 자기조립 필름 (self assembled film) 을 포함하되, 상기 기능화된 나노입자들은 나노입자와 그 위에 배치되고 상기 산화물 표면과 반응하는 적어도 하나의 기능적인 그룹을 갖는 유기 리간드 (organic ligand) 를 포함하며, 상기 자기조립필름은 상기 제 1직경을 제 2직경으로 감소시킨다.
필터 시스템은 압력 상태에서 전해액 (electrolytic solution) 을 수용하도록 구성된 제 1 볼륨 (volume); 및 내부에 형성된 복수의 나노채널들을 갖는 멤브레인에 의해서 상기 제 1 볼륨으로부터 분리된 제 2 볼륨을 포함하되, 상기 나노채널들은 제 1직경 및 상기 나노채널들의 표면에 부착된 나노입자들의 자기조립 단분자층 (monolayer) 을 포함하고, 상기 자기조립 단분자층은 상기 필터 시스템에, 상기 제 1 직경보다 작은 제 2직경을 제공하고, 상기 제 2직경은 멤브레인을 통한 전해액의 이온 (ions) 이동을 차단하는데 효과적이다.
필터 제조 방법은 각 나노채널의 내부 표면에 기능화된 나노입자들의 자기조립 단분자층을 부착하는 단계를 포함하는 다공성 멤브레인 재료내의 각 나노채널의 직경을 좁히는 단계를 포함하되, 상기 기능화된 나노입자들의 각각은 하나의 나노입자와 내부 표면상에 나노입자들의 자기조립 단분자층에 반응하고 형성하는데 효과적인 적어도 하나의 기능적인 그룹을 포함하는 나노입자들에 부착되는 유기 리간드를 포함한다.

본 발명에 따른, 새로운 반투과성의 나노다공성 멤브레인과 그 제조 프로세스를 이하에서 설명한다. 상기 반투과성의 멤브레인은 정의된 직경의 병렬 나노채널들의 어레이를 갖는 다공성 멤브레인을 포함하며, 상기 나노채널의 유체 통로 (fluid passageways) 를 정의하는 내부 표면들은 상기 직경을 더욱 좁히기 위하여 자기조립을 통해 기능화된 나노입자들과 반응한다. 한 실시 예에서, 기능화된 나노입자들의 크기는 다공성 멤브레인 나노채널들의 직경을 유체통로들을 통한 이온들의 이동을 효과적으로 차단하는 크기까지 좁힐 수 있도록 선택된다. 선행기술의 프로세스와는 달리, 상기 멤브레인을 제조하기 위한 본 발명의 프로세스는 간단하고, 효율적이며 상업적 실용성을 갖고 있다 (commercially viable).
반투과성 멤브레인은 다공성 멤브레인 재료들로부터 제조되는데, 이러한 재료들은 일반적으로, 직경이 약 20에서 300 나노미터정도가 되는 나노채널들의 병렬 어레이들을 포함한다. 다공성의 멤브레인 재료는, 잘 알려진 프로세스들을 이용하여, 금속 필름의 전해 부동태화 (electrolytic passivation), 예를 들어 양극산화 (anodization) 에 의해 제조될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 다양한 두께의 다공성의 양극산화된 알루미늄 산화물 필름 (porous anodized aluminum oxide films) 은 상업적으로도 이용 가능하며, 또는 종래 기술에서 잘 알려진 다양한 반응조건 아래 옥살산 (oxalic acid), 황산 (sulfuric acid), 크롬산 (chromic acid) 및/또는 인산 (phosphoric acids) 등에서 알루미늄 필름을 양극 산화함에 의해서 만들 수도 있다. 반복된 양극산화 - 에칭 (etching) 으로, 고도로 정렬된 곧은 나노채널들 (highly orders straight nanochannels) 이 자기 조직을 통해서 (through self-organization) 만들어질 수 있다. 이에 관한 프로세스들의 예가 Wang 등 이 기고한 논문 “자기조립 나노다공성 AAO 템플릿 (Templates) 을 통한 나노와이어와 나노튜브가공”에, O. Jessensky등이 Appl. Phys. Lett, 72, (1998)에 기고한 논문 “양극산화 알루미나 (anodic alumina) 내에서 육각형 기공 어레이의 자기 형성”의 p1173 에, 그리고 G. Sklar 등이 Nanotechnology, 16 (2005) 에 기고한 논문 “카본 나노튜브 어레이들의 화학증착 (CVD) 성장을 위한 AAO 템플릿으로의 펄스증착(pulsed deposition)” 1265- 1271에 기술되어 있다. 이들 프로세스들은 양극산화 (anodic oxidation) 프로세스에 의하여 병렬 나노채널들을 알루미늄 필름 내로 형성할 때 높은 애스펙트 비율 (aspect ratio) 을 달성하기 위해 이용될 수 있다. 발명의 상세한 설명에서 양극산화된 알루미늄 산화물 (anodized aluminum oxide) 에 관하여 특정 예 (specific reference) 를 들더라도, 본 발명이 그것에 한정되는 것은 아니다. 다른 멤브레인 재료들도 고려될 수 있다.
다공성 멤브레인 재료는 시트로 (in sheets) 만들어질 수 있어서 크기에 맞게 잘라서 사용하거나 (cut to size) 혹은 미리 크기가 정해진 (pre-sized) 패널에 포함될 수 있다. 담수화 어플리케이션들 (applications) 에 사용할 목적의, 다공성 멤브레인 재료는 20에서 30 나노미터의 나노채널 직경을 갖는 다공성 멤브레인이다. 다공성 멤브레인 재료는 기능화된 나노입자들의 용액 (solution) 에서 처리되며, 이 때 기능화된 나노입자의 특정 기능그룹은 산화 표면과 반응하도록 선택된다. 이렇게 하여서, 기능화된 나노입자들 단분자층의 자기조립이 나노채널의 내부 표면에 형성될 수 있고, 선행기술과는 달리, 입구 구멍 (inlet opening) 에서 출구 구멍 (outlet opening) 에 이르기까지 전체 표면을 코팅 (coat) 할 수 있다. 다공성 멤브레인 재료의 초기(starting) 직경에 따라, 기능화된 나노입자들도 선택될 수가 있는데, 나노채널을 특징짓는 내부 표면의 처리후, 대향하는 (opposing) 나노입자와의 거리는 어떤 실시 예에서는 20 나노미터 이하, 다른 실시 예에서는 10 나노미터 이하, 그리고 또 다른 실시 예에서는 5 나노미터 이하가 될 수 있다. 담수화 목적에 사용되기 위해서, 멤브레인에 의해 제공되는 최종 기공 직경은 2에서 3 나노미터이다. 최종 직경은 나노입자들의 입자크기와 리간드의 신중한 선택에 의하여 효과적으로 제어될 수 있다. 이렇게 하여, 멤브레인과 이를 이용한 필터는 주어진 상황에 맞춤식으로 (tailored) 제조될 수 있다. 담수화 프로세스에서, 상기 필터들은 역삼투 방식의 어플리케이션들에 이용될 수 있는데, 이 필터들에서 모든 이온들은 효과적으로 차단되어 오직 물만이 나노채널들을 통해 흐르게 된다. 그러나, 다른 물리적 혹은 화학적 프로세스들도 본 발명의 원리들을 채용할 수 있다.
여기에서 사용된, "나노입자”라는 용어는 일반적으로 100 이하의 적어도 일 차원을 갖는 모든 나노 재료를 지칭한다. 나노입자들은 결정질 (crystalline) 일수도, 혹은 아닐 수도 있다. 적합한 나노입자들은 특정 재료에 한정되지 않으며, 아래의 조건을 만족하면 가능하다. 즉 표면 다공성 멤브레인 재료에 반응하고, 예를 들어 산화물 표면에 반응하고, 배치되는 환경에 비활성적인 말단기 (end groups) 를 갖는 유기 리간드로 기능화될 수 있는 나노입자들은 모두 가능하다. 한 실시예에서, 나노입자들 재료는 표면 전하 (a surface charge) 를 내어놓지 (impart) 않는다. 다른 실시예들에서, 나노입자들은 표면에 전하를 내어 놓는다 (surface charged). 예시적인 나노입자들에는 구리, 금, 철, 은 등과 같은 금속, 티타늄산화물, 알루미늄산화물, 실리콘산화물, 아연산화물, 지르코늄산화물 등과 같은 금속산화물, 반도체 재료 등이 포함된다. 반도체 나노입자들은 일반적으로 비용때문에 덜 선호된다는 사실에 주목하여야 한다. 나노입자들의 입자크기는 다공성 멤브레인 재료내의 나노채널들의 직경에 따라 다르지만 일반적으로 2에서 20 나노미터이며, 특정 어플리케이션에 따라 더 작거나 더 큰 입자크기가 채용될 수 있다.
나노입자들은 유기 리간드로 나노입자들을 코팅함으로써 기능화된다. 유기 리간드들은 멤브레인 내에서 초기에 형성된 나노채널들의 내부 표면에 나노입자들을 부착하도록 (예를 들어, 공유 혹은 이온 결합 (covalent or ionic bond) 을 형성하도록) 충분히 반응하는 적어도 하나의 기능그룹을 포함한다. 적합한 유기 리간드들에는 제한이 없으며, 히드록삼산 (hydroxamic acid), 카르복실산 (carboxylic acid,), 포스폰산 (phosphonic acid), 다이피리딘 (dipyridine), 터피리딘 (terpyridine), 프탈로시아닌 (phthalocyanine)과 같은 말단기를 포함하는 화합물 (compounds), 혹은 적어도 하나의 전술한 말단기로 구성되는 조합 (combination) 이 포함된다. 특정 방향족 화합물의 한 특정예는 히드록삼산 테일그룹을 갖는 아릴디아조늄염 (aryldiazonium salt) 이다. 다른 예들에는 포스폰산 말단기 (phosphonic acid end group) 를 가진 디아조늄염이 포함되고, 산화 나노입자들에 대해서는 다이포스폰산 (diphosphonic acids), 다이히드록삼산 (dihydroxamic acids) 혹은 카르복실 혹은 히드록삼산 말단기를 가진 포스폰산과 같은 이작용기 유기 화합물 (bifunctional organic compounds) 을 사용할 수 있다.
아래의 도식 (Scheme) 1은 유기 리간드를 금속 나노입자들에 부착하는 예시적인 프로세스를 제공한다.
금속 나노입자, 유기 리간드
기능화된 나노입자
본 도식에서, x는 음이온 (anion), m은 2가결합 (divalent linkage), n은 1에서 500까지의 정수이고, Z는 나노채널들 표면과 반응하는 기능그룹이다. 금속 나노입자들 상의 하나 혹은 그 이상의 오리지널 리간드들 중 일부는 어플리케이션들의 필요에 따라 이작용기 유기분자와 교환될 수 있다.
도 1은 일반적으로 참조번호 (10) 에 의하여 지정되는 반투과성 멤브레인의 횡단면을 도시한다. 반투과성 멤브레인 (10) 은 병렬 나노기공들 혹은 나노채널들 (14) 의 어레이들 (12) 를 포함하는 다공성 멤브레인 재료 (16) 을 포함한다. 나노기공들의 직경은 일반적으로 20 나노미터에서 200 나노미터보다 크다. 나노채널 (14) 를 정의하는 내부 표면들은 기공직경을 10 나노미터 이하로 줄이기 위하여 나노입자들 (18) 의 단일 단분자층으로 구성된다. 담수화 어플리케이션들 (applications) 에 사용하기 위해, 기공 직경은 약 3 나노미터 이하로 감소된다. 이렇게 하면, 나트륨 (sodium) 이나 염소 (chlorine) 이온과 같은 소금물 내의 큰 전해질 이온들은 멤브레인 (10) 을 통하여 이동하는 것이 효과적으로 차단된다.
도 2는 위에서 바라다본 병렬 나노채널들 (14) 의 어레이 (12) 의 평면도를 도시한다. 각 나노채널 (14) 는 기능화된 나노입자들 (18) 의 자기 조립된 단분자층을 포함한다. 담수화 어플리케이션들을 위한 디바이스 혹은 멤브레인 (10) 은 약 3 나노미터의 최종직경을 갖도록 제작된다. 다른 크기들도 역시 가능하며 어플리케이션에 따라서 채용될 수도 있다.
멤브레인 재료의 한 예가 20에서 30 나노미터 정도의 기공직경을 갖는 양극산화된 알루미늄 산화물이다. 나노채널 산화물 표면들은 용액에서 제공된 유기 리간드 코팅된 나노입자들의 말단기 (end group) 와 반응하여 최종직경을 효과적으로 좁혀 대향하는 나노입자들의 거리가 약 3 나노미터가 되게 한다.
도 3을 참조하면, 담수화 디바이스 (100) 은 하나 혹은 그 이상의 반투과성 멤브레인 혹은 병렬 나노채널들의 대규모 어레이들과 기능화된 나노입자들의 자기 조립 단분자층을 갖는 필터 (102) 를 포함한다. 멤브레인 (102) 는 튼튼하게 하기 위하여 격자 (grid), 망 (mesh) 혹은 다른 구조 멤버상에서 구성될 수 있다. 멤브레인 (102) 의 나노채널 어레이들은 제 1수조 (reservoir) 혹은 용기 (container) (104) 내의 유체 용량, 예를 들어 담겨있는 소금물 용액을 제 2 볼륨 (106) 으로부터 분리하여, 나트륨과 염소이온이 제 2 볼륨 (106) 에 침투하지 못하게 함으로써 소금기가 제거된 물을 생산한다. 소금기가 함유된 측 (the salinated side) 에 압력 P를 인가하면 멤브레인 (102) 의 나노기공/나노채널 어레이를 통한 물분자들의 투과를 증가시킬 수 있다. 믹서 혹은 기타 혼합 장치 (perturbation device) (120) 는 볼륨 (104) 내의 물을 뒤섞는데 유용할 수 있다,
압력조절 장치 (pressure regulator device) (112) 가 담수화 시스템 (100) 의 적절한 기능 수행을 확실히 하도록 압력 P를 유지하기 위해 채용될 수 있다. 이와 달리, 컨테이너가 동작압력 (working pressure) P를 제공하도록 구성될 수 있는데, 이는 유체 볼륨 혹은 컨테이너 (104) 내의 물기둥 높이를 이용하거나 기타 수단에 의하여 그렇게 할 수 있다
도 3에서 도시된 실시 예에서 필터하는 것 (filtration) 을 더욱 정교하게 (refine) 하기 위해서 복수의 멤브레인들을 직렬로 (in series) 포함하도록 할 수 있다. 한 실시예에서, 다른 필터하는 단계들이 채용될 수 있는데, 이렇게 하는 이유는 각 단계에서 압력을 잘 제어하여 각 단계에서 필터가 효율적으로 수행되도록 하기 위함이다. 이것은 각 단계에서 유체의 중간압력을 증가시키거나 감소시키는 것을 포함한다.
다른 한 실시 예는 추가의 멤브레인 (102’) 와 단계 (116) 을 포함하는데, 이는 다른 차원들에서 필터를 하기 위함이다. 예를 들면, 제 1 볼륨 (104) 의 바닷물은 제일 먼저 중간 필터 (102) 를 통과하게 되는데 이 때 전부가 아닌 일부 이온들이 차단된다. 그 다음에 제 2 단계의 필터 (102’) 가 사용될 수 있는데, 이 필터는 나노채널들에 대한 다른 직경을 가지고 있기 때문에 다른 농도 (concentration) 를 차단한다
지금까지 한 예로서 물의 담수화를 설명하였으나, 다른 유체들도 본 발명의 원리에 따라 필터될 수 있다. 지금까지 설명한 담수화 시스템은 수동적이어서 (전력원을 필요로 하지 않아서) 유익할 수 있고, 그리고 저렴한 담수화 시스템 혹은 비상 담수화 시스템 (예를 들어, 구명보트 (life rafts) 에서) 으로서 채용될 수 있다.
도 4를 참조하면, 도 4는 본 발명의 원리에 따른 필터를 사용하는 방법에 대한 흐름도를 도시한다. 블록 (250)에서, 제 1 볼륨은 전해액으로 채워진다. 이 볼륨의 전해액은 잘 섞어주고 지속적으로 보충해 주는 것이 바람직하다. 블록 (252) 에서, 압력 문턱값 (threshold value) 아래에 있는 제 1 볼륨내의 전해액에 압력이 인가된다. 블록 (254) 에서 전해액의 유체는 멤브레인에 의하여 제 1볼륨으로부터 분리된 제 2볼륨으로 이동한다. 멤브레인은 전술한 바와 같이 그 안에 복수의 나노채널들을 형성하여 가질 수 있다. 제 2볼륨의 유체는 담수화되었거나 혹은 부분적으로 담수화되어 있다. 추가적인 단계들이 추가될 수 있다.
지금까지 담수화를 위한 나노다공성 반투과성의 멤브레인의 바람직한 실시 예들에 관하여 설명하였지만 (이 설명은 어디까지나 예시적인 것이며 발명의 범위를 제한하려는 의도는 없음), 상기 설명을 참고하여 당업자에 의하여 수정들과 변형들이 가능하다는 점을 이해해야 한다. 그러므로 첨부된 청구범위에 기재된 본 발명의 범위 내에 있는 특정한 실시예들 내에서 변경들이 가능하다는 점도 이해해야 한다. 특허법의 요건에 따라 본 발명의 여러 실시 예들을 상세하고 구체적으로 기재하였으며, 특허증 (Letters Patent) 에 의하여 보호받기를 희망하는 특허청구 범위를 아래 첨부한 청구항들에 기재하였다.
Claims (20)
- 필터에 있어서,
내부에 (therein) 형성된 복수의 나노채널들을 갖는 다공성 멤브레인 (a porous membrane) - 상기 나노채널들은 산화물 표면 (an oxide surface) 을 포함하고 제 1직경 (a first diameter) 을 가짐 - ; 및
기능화된 (functionalized) 나노입자들의 자기조립 (self assembled) 필름 - 상기 기능화된 나노입자들은 나노입자와 그 위에 배치된 (disposed thereon) 상기 산화 표면과 반응하는 적어도 하나의 기능적인 그룹을 갖는 유기 리간드를 포함하고, 상기 자기조립 필름은 상기 제 1직경을 제 2직경으로 감소시킴 -을 포함하는
필터. - 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 멤브레인은 알루미늄을 포함하고 상기 나노채널들은 양극산화 알루미늄 산화물 (anodic aluminum oxide) 을 이용하여 형성되는
