제2 레벨 계층적 테이블은 제1 레벨 계층적 테이블보다 한개의 디멘전이 적을 수 있는 한편, 제3 레벨 계층적 테이블은 제2 레벨 계층적 테이블보다 한개의 디멘전이 적을 수 있음을 유의한다. 각각의 계층적 테이블에서의 팩트의 개수는 반드시 달라야 할 필요는 없음에 또한 유의한다.
계층적 레벨은 레벨 "n-1"에 비해 레벨 "n"에서 데이터 액세스를 보다 빠르게 할 수 있게 한다. 즉, 데이터는 상위 레벨에서 더 빠르게 액세스될 수 있다. 이런 개념은 순차적으로 디멘전을 제거함으로써 행의 개수를 최소화시키는 것이다. 디멘전의 제거로 테이블이 보다 작아지는데, 이는 데이터 액세스를 보다 빠르게 한다.

프런트 엔드의 일반적인 역할은 OLAP 큐브의 해당 슬라이스를 사용자가 보기를 원하는 바로 그 포맷으로 보고 디스플레이함에 있어 사용자가 관심을 가지는 모든 데이터를 포함하는 OLAP 큐브의 해당 슬라이스를 최적으로 획득하는 것이다. 필터 페이지는 사용자가 디멘전에 대한 기준을 이용하여 OLAP 큐브를 슬라이스할 수 있게 한다. 레이아웃 페이지는 사용자가 리포트의 포맷을 지정할 수 있게 한다.
계속해서 도 3을 참조해 보면, 프런트 엔드 프로그램(220)은 사용자 인터페이스(360), 스케줄러(374), 및 경보(376)를 포함할 수 있다. 일 실시예에서, 프런트 엔드 프로그램(220)은 애플리케이션TM 프로그래밍 언어를 위한 마이크로소프트 비주얼 베이직(VBA)을 이용하여 구현된다. 사용자 인터페이스(360)는 사용자가 선택 기준을 입력하고 이 선택 기준에 따라 리포트를 생성할 수 있게 하기 위한 컴퓨터-판독가능 프로그램 코드를 포함할 수 있다. 선택 기준은 디멘전 및 팩터에 대한 값일 수 있다. 사용자 인터페이스(360)는 레이아웃 스크린(362), 필터 스크린(363), 및 리포트 스크린(364)을 포함할 수 있다.

다른 예로서, 선택 영역(510 및 512)으로부터 선택될 수 있는 값은 선택 영역(508)에서 사용자에 의해 선택된 값에 기초한다(도 5 참조). 선택 영역(510 및 512)에 디스플레이될 수 있는 유효한 값들은 디멘전 제어 테이블(342) 및 계층적 제어 테이블(344)로부터 결정될 수 있다.
대부분의 서버 컴퓨터의 처리를 줄여주는 프런트 엔드 프로그램은 온라인 광고에서 특히 중요하다. 메일 주문 또는 카달로그 광고 응용과는 다르게, 인터넷을 통한 광고 전달은 본질적으로, 광고주가 상당량의 추가 비용을 감당하지 않고 추가적인 광고를 전송할 수 있다는 점에서 무료이다. 이는 비교적 대량의 노출 데이터를 산출한다. 프런트 엔드 프로그램(220)은 바람직하게도 클라이언트 컴퓨터가 백엔드 서버를 이용하여 대량의 데이터를 액세스하여 "과도한 리프팅(heavy lifting)"을 할 수 있게 한다. 이는 (여러면에서 프로그래머가 제어할 수 없는) 클라이언트 컴퓨터 자원에 의지하는 것과 반대로 근본적으로 백 엔드 프로그램의 규모를 조정함(scale)으로써 확장성에 있어서 바람직한 효과를 가질 것이다. 이는 또한 강력한 프로그래밍을 할 수 있게 하고 비교적 오래되었거나 낮은 용량의 클라이언트 컴퓨터를 가지고도 데이터를 검색할 수 있게 한다.

Claims (20)

    상기 소비자 데이터에 기초하여 데이터베이스를 생성하는 단계,
    프런트 엔드로부터 사용자가 선택한 값들을 수신하는 단계 - 상기 프런트 엔드는 초기에 선택된 값에 따라 변경되는 사용자가 선택가능한 값들을 가지는 선택 영역을 가짐 - , 및
    상기 사용자가 선택한 값들에 기초하여 상기 데이터베이스로부터 데이터를 추출하는 단계를 포함하는 방법.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 복수의 계층적 테이블 각각은 디멘전(dimension) 및 팩트(fact)를 포함하며,
    상기 팩트는 일부가 상기 소비자 데이터에서 유래한 방법.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 소비자 데이터는 광고의 노출(impression) 횟수를 포함하는 방법.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 소비자 데이터는 광고에 대한 클릭 횟수를 포함하는 방법.
