Abstract
광 모듈레이터 배열과 같은 열(40) 및 행(30)을 가지는 MEMS 장치의 배열(10 또는 15)은, 다수의 이산 전압(70)을 제공하는 단계, 이산 전압으로부터 배열 각각의 MEMS 장치(20)에 인가되는 선택된 전압(21)을 다중화(multiplexing)하는 단계, 배열의 각각의 MEMS 장치에 선택된 이산 전압의 인가를 가능하게 하는 단계에 의하여, 입력 신호에 대응하여 제어된다.
Description
본 발명은 아날로그 MEMS 배열의 제어에 관한 것이고, 더 구체적으로는 광 모듈레이터 배열의 아날로그 전압 제어에 관한 것이다.
각각의 픽셀 셀(pixel cell)의 2진 디지털 제어를 사용하는 광 모듈레이터 배열은 모노크롬 텍스트 디스플레이(monochrome text display) 및 프로젝터에서 많이 사용되고 있다. 그레이 스케일 및 컬러를 생성하기 위하여, 단순한 2진 제어보다는, 아날로그 신호로 각각의 픽셀 셀을 제어하는 방법이 바람직하다. 광 모듈레이터 배열 시스템에서 고해상도 컬러 또는 그레이 스케일을 달성하기 위하여, 일반적으로 고려되는 두 가지 방법으로, 펄스폭 모듈레이션(pulse-width modulation) 및 모듈레이터 요소의 직접적인 아날로그 제어가 있다. 펄스폭 모듈레이션을 사용하는 경우 단일 프레임 사이클을 다중 사이클 세그먼트로 분할하고 각각의 사이클 세그먼트(cycle segment) 동안 각각의 모듈레이터 요소에 대한 데이터를 전송하는 것이 요구된다. 큰 배열 및 높은 해상도를 위하여, 이 방법에서는 매우 높은 데이터 전송률(data rate)이 요구될 수 있다. 광 프로젝터 산업에서는, 원하는 컬러의 해상도를 유지하면서 이 데이터 전송률을 감소시키는 수단을 발견하기 위하여, 중요한 노력들이 계속되어 왔다.

본 발명은 각각의 픽셀 셀에서 아날로그 제어 회로를 복제하지 않고 다수의 구동 전압에서 셀에 개별적으로 어드레싱(individual addressability)할 수 있는 방법 및 장치를 구현하는 것을 목적으로 한다.

발명의 상세한 설명 및 첨부된 클레임 전체에 있어서, "MEMS"라는 용어는 초소형 전자 기계 시스템(micro-electro-mechanical system)이라는 일반적인 의미를 갖는다. 본 발명은 다양한 종류의 MEMS 장치를 포함하는 배열에 적용될 수 있다. 명확성과 특정성을 위하여, 상세하게 설명된 실시예는 MEMS 장치가 모듈레이터 픽셀 셀인 광 모듈레이터 배열의 관점에서 설명된다. 이 실시예는 다른 아날로그-제어가능 MEMS 장치에도 적용될 수 있는 본 발명에 따른 원리 및 실시를 설명한다.
본 발명은, 각각의 픽셀 셀에서 아날로그 제어 회로를 복제하는 부담 없이, 다수의 구동 전압에서 셀에 개별적으로 어드레싱(individual addressability)할 수 있다는 장점을 제공한다. 행 및 열을 갖는 광 모듈레이터 배열은, 다수의 이산 전압을 제공하는 단계, 이산 전압들로부터 배열 각각의 픽셀로 인가되는 선택 전압을 다중화(multiplexing)하는 단계, 선택된 이산 전압을 배열의 각각의 픽셀로 인가할 수 있도록 하는 단계에 의하여 입력 신호에 대응하여 제어된다.
아래에 상세히 설명된 실시예는 마이크로 미러, 또는 회절 기반 모듈레이터 또는 간섭 기반 모듈레이터 배열과 같은 광 모듈레이션 요소의 배열에서 셀의 전압 제어를 위한 방법을 설명한다. 아날로그 제어 회로는 배열의 경계에 삽입되어, 픽셀 셀 수준에서 아날로그 제어 회로를 복제할 필요성을 제거한다. 상기 어드레싱 방식은 적정한 전압 수준의 개개의 셀에 대한 다중화를 허용한다.

DAC(51 내지 53)의 입력에서 필요한 디지털 신호의 비트 수는 요구되는 서로 다른 아날로그 전압의 수에 의하여 결정된다. 배열에서의 행 데이터는 종래의 2진 구동 배열의 데이터와 유사하다. 행 데이터는 선택된 모듈레이터 픽셀 셀(20)에 대한 선택된 열 전압을 구동하기 위한 ENABLE 신호로 동작한다.
도 2는 본 발명에 따라 제어되는 광 모듈레이터 배열의 제2 실시예(15)의 개략도이다. 도 2에서, 열(1 내지 3)은 참조부호(31 내지 33)에 의하여, 행(1 내지 3)은 참조부호(41 내지 43)에 의하여 각각 구분된다. 도 1에서처럼, 각각의 픽셀 셀(20)은 전압 Vin입력(21) 및 ENABLE 입력(22)을 갖는다.
도 2의 실시예에 있어서, Vref1(71), Vref2(72), Vref3(73)와 같은 다수의 이산 아날로그 레퍼런스 전압(70; discrete analog reference voltage)이 제공된다. 아날로그 다중화기(80; MUX)의 집합은, 행 데이터(60)에 따라 각각의 행에 대한 아날로그 레퍼런스 전압을 선택한다. 예를 들어, 아날로그 MUX(81)는 열(1)의 버스(41)에 인가되는 Vref1(71), Vref2(72), Vref3(73) 중에서 아날로그 전압을 선택한다. 유사하게, 아날로그 MUX(82)는 열(2)의 버스(42)에 인가되는 아날로그 레퍼런스 전압의 동일한 집합으로부터 아날로그 전압을 선택하고 아날로그 MUX(83)는 열(3)의 버스(43)에 인가되는 아날로그 레퍼런스 전압의 동일한 집합으로부터 아날로그 전압을 선택한다. 도 1에서처럼, 행 데이터는 선택된 모듈레이터 픽셀 셀(20)에 대한 선택된 열 전압 Vin을 구동하기 위한 ENABLE 신호로 동작한다.
Vref1(71), Vref2(72), 및 Vref3(73)와 같은 프로그램가능 아날로그 레퍼런스 전압(70)은 각각의 이산 아날로그 레퍼런스 전압(71 내지 73)에 대한 DAC를 사용하여, 전체 광 모듈레이터 배열(15)을 위한 종래의 DAC들의 단일 집합(도시되지 않음)에 의하여 생성될 수 있다. 당업자는 이산 아날로그 레퍼런스 전압의 수는 도 2에 도시된 3개로 제한되는 것은 아니고, 원하는 임의의 수의 이산 아날로그 레퍼런스 전압이 사용될 수 있다는 것을 이해할 것이다.
도 3은 광 모듈레이션 픽셀 요소와 같은 전압 구동 MEMS 요소를 위한 구동 회로를 간단하고 개략적인 블록도를 통하여 보여주고 있는데, 각각의 픽셀 셀(20)에서 전압 Vin입력(21) 및 ENABLE 입력(22)이 어떻게 구현되는지를 도시하고 있다. 행 ENABLE 신호(35)에 의하여 게이트 연산되는 단일 패스 게이트(90)는 모듈레이터 픽셀 셀(20)에 인가되는 선택된 Vin전압 입력(45)을 구동한다. 캐패시터(25)는 필요한 경우 인가된 아날로그 전압 Vin을유지하는데 사용될 수 있는데, 캐패시턴스(25)가 따로 필요하지 않도록 픽셀 셀(20)이 내장 캐패시턴스 C를 가질수도 있다.
따라서, 도 1 및 2의 실시예 모두는 원하는 범위의 이산 아날로그 전압을 생성하기 위하여 각각 다수의 전압 제어 요소(50 또는 80)를 이용한다. 그런 후에 이산 아날로그 전압은 모듈레이터 배열의 열에서 다중화 된다. 각각의 셀에서 아날로그 전압 수준을 생성하는 것과는 달리, 주어진 범위의 전압 중 임의의 하나를 개별 픽셀 셀로 다중화 함으로써, 데이터 전송률의 증가를 최소로 하면서, 향상된 컬러 해상도를 가능하게 할 수 있다.
주어진 범위의 전압 중 임의의 하나를 개별적인 픽셀 셀로 다중화하는 것에 의해, 고가의 제조 공정도 제거할 수 있고, 모듈레이터 배열의 개별적인 픽셀 요소에 적합한 크기를 갖는 아날로그 제어 회로를 가능하게 할 수 있다.
광 모듈레이터 배열(10 및 15) 모두를 제어하기 위하여 설명된 상기 방법은 다수의 이산 아날로그 전압을 제공하는 단계를 포함한다. 상기 설명된 방법은, 배열의 각 픽셀 셀(20)에 대한 행(30) 및 열(40)을 사용하여 픽셀에 인가되는 전압을 이산 전압들로부터 선택하는 단계, 선택된 전압을 열로 인가하는 단계, 및 픽셀에 대한 행을 선택함으로써 선택된 전압을 픽셀에 인가할 수 있도록 하는 단계에 의해 구현된다. 상기 제공되는 이산 전압은 도 1에서처럼 각각의 열에서 또는 도 2에서처럼 전체 배열(또는 배열에서 임의의 원하는 부분)에 대하여 DAC를 사용하여 프로그래밍될 수 있는 아날로그 레퍼런스 전압이다. 전압 선택, 전압 인가 및 인에이블링은 광 모듈레이터 배열의 모든 픽셀에 대하여 실질적으로 동시에 수행될 수 있다.

따라서, 본 발명은 복수의 픽셀을 갖는 광 모듈레이터 배열을 제어하기 위한 방법 및 장치를 제공한다. 제어기 장치는 다수의 이산 아날로그 전압을 제공하고, 이산 아날로그 전압들로부터 각각의 픽셀에 인가되는 특정 아날로그 전압을 선택하고, 각각의 선택된 픽셀에 선택된 아날로그 전압을 인가한다. 선택된 아날로그 전압을 각각의 픽셀에 인가한 것을 게이트 연산하는 것도 본 장치에 의하여 제공된다. 상기 아날로그 전압의 다중화(multiplexing)는 광 모듈레이터 배열의 행/열 어드레싱과 통합된다.
본 발명의 방법 및 장치는 마이크로 미러, 회절 기반 모듈레이터 또는 간섭 기반 모듈레이터와 같은 다양한 종류의 아날로그-제어가능 MEMS 장치 배열, 광 모듈레이터 배열 및 광 프로젝터의 제어와 LCD(liquid crystal) 모듈레이터 제어에 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.
상술한 바와 같이 본 발명의 실시예를 상세히 설명하고 도시하였으나, 당업자는 클레임에 의하여 정의된 본 발명의 본질 및 범위를 벗어나지 않는 한도에서수정 및 변형을 가할 수 있다. 예를 들어 당업자는 설명된 실시예의 내용으로부터 행 및 열의 역할이 바뀔 수 있다는 것을 인식할 것이다. 이러한 방법으로, 다수의 이산 전압이 제공되고, 배열의 각각의 픽셀에 대하여, 픽셀에 인가되는 전압은 이산 전압으로부터 선택되고, 선택된 전압은 픽셀의 행에 인가되고, 픽셀로 선택된 전압을 인가하는 것은 픽셀을 위한 열을 선택함으로써 가능해진다. 또한, 당업자는, 상술한 전압 제어는 종래의 펄스폭 모듈레이션과 함께 사용되어, 요구되는 데이터 전송률의 증가는 최소화되며 향상된 컬러 해상도를 가능케 할 수 있다는 사실도 인식할 것이다. 예를 들어, 두 가지 아날로그 전압(예를 들어, 1V 및 2V)이 사용되고, 2비트의 펄스폭 데이터가 사용될 경우[4 가능 작업 주기(duty cycle)], 8단계의 강도를 실현할 수 있다.
본 발명은 복수의 픽셀을 갖는 광 모듈레이터 배열을 제어하기 위한 방법 및 장치를 제공함으로써, 각각의 픽셀 셀에서 아날로그 제어 회로를 복제하지 않고 다수의 구동 전압에서 셀에 개별적으로 어드레싱(individual addressability)할 수 있는 특유의 효과를 달성할 수 있다.

- 입력 신호에 대응하여, 배열의 특정 MEMS 장치를 선택하기 위하여 열 및 행을 갖는 방식의 MEMS 장치의 배열을 제어하기 위한 방법에 있어서,a) 다수의 이산 전압을 제공하는 단계;b) 상기 입력 신호에 응답하여, 상기 이산 전압으로부터 상기 배열 각각의 MEMS 장치에 인가되는 선택된 이산 전압을 다중화하는 단계; 및c) 상기 배열의 각각의 MEMS 장치로 상기 선택된 이산 전압의 인가를 가능하게 하는 단계를 포함하는 방법.

- 입력 신호에 대응하여, 배열의 픽셀을 선택하기 위하여 열 및 행을 갖는 방식의 광 모듈레이터 배열을 제어하기 위한 장치에 있어서,a) 다수의 이산 전압 소스;b) 그 각각이 열에 연결되는 복수의 전압 선택 블록을 포함하고, 상기 입력 신호에 응답하여 상기 이산 전압 소스로부터 상기 배열의 각각의 픽셀에 인가되는 선택된 전압을 다중화하기 위한 다중화기; 및c) 상기 배열의 각각의 픽셀로 상기 선택된 이산 전압의 인가를 가능하게 하기 위한 복수의 게이트 - 각각의 게이트는 열에 연결됨 - 를 포함하는 장치.
- 복수의 MEMS 장치를 갖는 광 모듈레이터 배열을 위한 제어기에 있어서,a) 다수의 이산 아날로그 전압을 제공하기 위한 수단;b) 상기 이산 전압들로부터 각각의 MEMS 장치에 인가되는 아날로그 전압을 선택하기 위한 수단; 및c) 상기 선택된 아날로그 전압을 각각의 MEMS 장치에 인가하기 위한 수단을 포함하는 제어기.
