건조 고체 폐기물을 캡슐화하는 방법과 생성된 폐기물 형태가 발표된다. 건조 과립 폐기물이 폴리실록산 및 적절한 촉매와 혼합되고 주변 조건하에서 경화된다. 폐기물 형태는 낮은 삼출지수와 장기간 안정에 필요한 다른 특성을 보인다.
Description
환경피해를 막기 위해서 폐기물을 처리하는 방법이 개발되어왔다. 용이하고 경제적으로 환경에 무해하게 될 수 없는 폐기물은 처리문제를 부과한다. 잠재적 유해 폐기물의 예는 미국 에너지부(DOE)에 의해 발생된 혼성 폐기물 염이다. 이러한 폐기물을 저장/처리하는 방법을 제공하는 시도가 행해졌다. 일부 방법은 폐기물을 다양한 형태로 안정시켜서 폐기물이 환경으로 누출되는 것을 방지하는 시도를 한다.
이러한 폐기물을 안정화시키는 최상의 기술은 2차 폐기물 스트림을 생성시킨다. 포틀랜드 시멘트를 사용하는 폐기물 캡슐화 방법은 20% 폐기물 적재량을 제공한다. 또다른 폐기물 염 처리방법은 열처리이다. 열처리 기술은 초우란(transuranic) 재료의 경우 특히 곤란한 비싸고 문제가 되는 오프-가스 시스템이다. 독성 삼출 절차(TCLP)테스트를 통과하는 것을 포함한 자원 보존 및 회수규칙(RCRA)표준을 고수하면서 폐기물 적재량을 증가시키는 것이 당해분야에서 요구된다. 추가로 최종 폐기물 형태는 가연성, 부식성 또는 반응성을 보여서는 안된다.
본 발명은 무기재료를 회수하는데 사용된 중화된 산성용액을 고형화 시킴으로써 발생될 수 있는 건조 과립 염을 안정화시키는 방법에 관계한다. 이러한 폐기물은 가용성 크롬화합물, 질산나트륨, 질산칼륨, 플로토늄 238 및 239 잔량, 우라늄 238잔량, 또는 다른 유해 오염물을 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명은 유해한 또는 방사능 성분을 함유한 혼합 폐기물을 캡슐화 및 안정화시키는 방법에 관계한다. 특히 본 발명은 폴리실록산 매트릭스내에 혼합폐기물을 캡슐화 및 안정화시키는 방법에 관계한다.
폐기물을 캡슐화 및 안정화시켜서 처리에 적합한 응집성 물질을 형성하는 방법 제공이 본 발명의 목적이다.
낮은 삼출지수 또는 잠재성을 갖는 폐기물 형태를 제공하는 것도 본 발명의 목적이다.
20%이상의 폐기물 적재를 수행할 수 있는 폐기물 캡슐화 방법 제공도 본 발명의 목적이다.
요약하면 본 발명은 고체 폐기물을 분쇄하고, 분쇄된 고체 폐기물을 폴리실록산과 조합하여 슬러리를 생성하고, 슬러리에 촉매를 첨가하고, 슬러리-촉매화합물을 성형하고, 성형된 혼합물을 경화시킴으로써 건조 과립 염 혼합물을 안정화시키는 방법을 제공한다.
본 발명의 한 측면에 따르면 고체 폐기물 캡슐화 시스템이 제공된다. 이 시스템은 경화전 10 내지 60중량%의 건조 고체 폐기물 40 내지 90중량%의 폴리실록산 및 폴리실록산을 경화시키기에 충분한 촉매를 포함한다.
또다른 측면에 따르면 고체 폐기물은 가용성 크롬화합물, 질산나트륨, 질산칼륨 또는 염화나트륨으로 구성된 과립 염 혼합물을 포함한다.
또다른 측면에 따르면 건조 폐기물은 고 질산이온함량을 가질 수 있다.
또다른 측면에서 건조 폐기물은 고 염소이온함량을 가질 수 있다.
또다른 측면에서 폴리실록산 시스템은 주변조건하에서 경화된다.
본 발명의 또다른 측면에 따르면 경화된 폴리실록산 시스템에 캡슐화된 고체 폐기물을 포함하는 폐기물 형태가 제공된다. 폐기물 형태는 고체폐기물을 예정된 입자크기로 분쇄하고, 분쇄된 고체폐기물을 폴리실록산과 혼합하여 슬러리를 수득하고, 슬러리에 촉매를 첨가하고, 예정된 시간동안 슬러리-촉매 혼합믈을 혼합하고, 슬러리-촉매혼합물을 성형하고, 성형된 혼합물을 경화시켜서 제조된다.
본 발명의 한가지 장점은 얕게 땅에 매립하기에 적합한 형태로 DOE 염 폐기물을 안정화시킬 수 있다는 것이다. 폐기물형태는 저삼출지수를 가지며 운송국(DOT)산화기 표준을 통과한다.
본 발명의 또다른 장점은 필요한 재료의 작용성 및 구매가능성 때문에 용이하게 실시될 수 있다는 것이다.
또다른 장점은 방사능을 포함한 혹독한 환경에서 내성이 있는 폴리실록산 시스템을 사용한다는 것이다.
주변 조건하에서 본 발명이 실시될 수 있다는 것도 본 발명의 장점이다.
본 발명에 따라서 폴리실록산 매트릭스에 폐기물을 캡슐화 및 안정화시키는 방법이 제공된다. 본 발명의 목적을 위해 3개의 대용 폐기물이 제시된다. 대용폐기물 #1(SW#1)은 "Pad-A"로서 언급되는 Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory(INEEL)에서 발견되는 질산염 형태를 모방한다. 두 개의 추가 대용 폐기물은 고 염소이온 함유 폐기물(SW#2) 및 고 질산이온 함유 폐기물(SW#3)은 RCRA 금속과 함께 오염물로서 포함하는 혼성 폐기물 포커스 에어리어(MWFA)폐기물을 모방한다. 대용 폐기물의 조성은 표 1 및 2 에 도시된다.
폐기물은 건조 과립형태이다. 본 발명에서 건고 폐기물은 폴리실록산 캡슐화제와 혼합된다. 적절한 촉매 혼합후 폴리실록산 시스템이 성형되고 경화된다. 선호되는 구체예에서 폴리실록산 시스템은 실온 경화성이다. 경화된 시스템은 내구적이며 저 삼출지수를 갖는다. 이러한 특성을 최종 폐기물 형태의 장기간 안정성과 처리스설로의 운송이나 처리의 적합성을 제공한다.
폴리실록산 시스템은 잠재적 폐기물 캡슐화 시스템으로서 매력적인 다양한 고유성질을 가진다. 이들은 적절한 배합물에서 용매, 산 및 염기에 대해 높은 내성을 갖는다. 폴리실록산 시스템은 환경친화성이다. 이 시스템은 주변온도나 약간 상승된 온도에서 작동하므로 오프-가스처리공정이 불필요하다. 시스템의 점도는 적용분야에 따라 자유유동성액체로부터 고점성 물질로 변성될 수 있다. 사용된 촉매와 경화는 겪는 물질의 온도에 따라 경화시간은 수초 내지 수일이다.
실제 경화공정은 시스템내 다양한 약품에 대해 내성이 있다. 또한 폴리실록산 시스템은 존재하는 다양한 오염물에 의해 일반적으로 파괴되지 않는다. 또한 테스트에 사용된 모든 대용 폐기물은 시약급이라기 보다 공업용등급이어서 전형적인 폐기물형태에서 기대되는 오염물을 더 가깝게 조사시킨다. 본 발명의 한 구체예에서 폴리실록산 시스템의 점도는 혼합물을 용이하게 할정도로 충분히 낮으며 경화동안 균일한 분포는 오염물을 유지시키도록 충분히 높다.
실시예 1: 샘플제조
폐기물 캡슐화 시스템의 배합이 표 3 에 제시된다. 실험에 의한 연구를 위해서 스텐레스강 패들이 설비동 수동 드릴을 사용하여 1갤론 플라스틱 통에서 혼합이 수행된다. 건조 폐기물은 1mm미만, 특히 0.6mm미만의 입자크기로 분쇄된다. 폴리머 베이스와 건조폐기물이 최소한 5분동안 혼합된다. 촉매가 첨가된다. 혼합물을 추가 5분간 혼합하고 플라스틱 실린더 몰드에 옮긴다. 샘플을 후드에 넣고 테스트에 앞서 최소 24시간동안 경화시킨다.

실시예 2: 대표적인 배합물
질산염 폐기물(SW#1)으로 사용하기 위한 배합물이 표 4 에 제시된다. 선호되는 폴리머 베이스는 RTV664(General Electric) 및 ELTROGIARD2100(Wacker Silicones Corp.)과 같은 실온 경화성 폴리실록산을 포함한다. 선호되는 폴리실록산의 제품데이타는 제조자의 기술적 데이터 쉬이트로부터 얻을 수 있다. 촉매의 중량은 폴리실록산 중량에 기초하여 Wacker-2100의 경우에 0.3중량%이고 GE RTV-664의 경우에 10중량%이다. 폐기물형태가 위에서 제시된 절차에 따라 제조되어 테스트에 앞서서 최소 24시간 경화된다. 다른 폐기물이 적재된 샘플이 제조되고 테스트된다.

실시예 3: 삼출성 연구
삼출성은 폐기물 형태가 환경으로의 유해성분 방출을 억제하는 능력이다. GE RTV664 폴리실록산 시스템을 사용하여 제시된 폐기물 형태 샘플이 USEPA SW-846에 따라 TCLP 테스트를 받는다. 표 5 는 30% 및 50% 폐기물 적재시 SW#1의 결과를 보여준다. 표 6 은 30% 및 50% 폐기물 적재시 SW#2 및 SW#3 의 결과를 보여준다.

표 7 은 측정되는 화학종으로서 크롬을 사용한 폐기물 적재의 함수로서 삼출데이타를 보여준다. 샘플은 GE RTV664 폴리실록산 시스템을 사용하여 제조된다. 테스트는 ASTM C-1308에 따른다.

실시예 4: 압축강도연구
처리 환경에서 하중 압력을 견디는 능력과 폐기물 형태의 기계적 완전성이 압축강도에 관련된다. 압축강도는 내구성 테스트를 받는 샘플의 내성 게이지로서 사용된다. 압축강도 테스트로 60psi 이상의 압축강도가 50%정도 높은 폐기물 적재의 경우에 달성될 수 있음을 알 수 있다. 본 발명의 방법에 의해 제조된 폐기물 형태는 지진시 발생되거나 얕게 땅에 매립하는 동안 차등 침전에 의해 발생된 전단력을 견딜 수 있다.
한 구체예에서 폴리실록산 시스템은 20%이상의 폐기물 적재를 달성하며 공지기술의 폐기물 처리시스템에서 발생하는 2차 폐기물 스트림을 발생시키지 않는다. 30%부터 90%까지의 폐기물 적재가 테스트된다. 응집성 단일체 폐기물 형태가 최대 50%폐기물 적재까지 달성되며 압축강도는 60psidl상으로 유지된다. 표 8 은 본 발명에 따라 제조된 다양한 샘플에 대한 데이터를 제공한다. 샘플 1 및 2 는 Wacker 2100 폴리실록산 시스템을 사용했다. 샘플 3 및 4 는 GE RTV 664 폴리실록산 시스템을 사용했다.

실시예 4: 충전제 첨가
폐기물 형태에 충전제를 포함시킴으로써 캡슐화된 폐기물의 삼출성 수준을 개선시킬 수 있다. 예컨대 철산화물, 인산염 또는 기타 삼출 방지제가 활용될 수 있다. 표 9 는 pH3 과 pH7에서 GE RTV 664샘플에 철산화물을 첨가하는 TCLP 결과를 보여준다. 샘플중량은 10그램이고 폐기물 적재는 37중량%이며 철산화물 첨가는 샘플 총중량에 기초한다.

경제적 이유로 폴리실록산 매트릭스에 다른 충전제가 첨가될 수 있다. 이러한 충전제는 탄산칼슘, 훈증 실리카, 이산화 실리콘, 마그네슘 실리케이트, 칼슘 실리케이트등을 포함한다. 충전제는 본 발명에 따라 제조된 최종 폐기물 형태의 물성에 악영향을 주지 않도록 선택되어야 한다.
Claims (19)
10 내지 60중량%의 건조 고체 폐기물;
40 내지 90중량%의 폴리실록산;
폴리실록산을 경화시키기에 효과적인 촉매를 포함하는 경화전 고체 폐기물 켑슐화 시스템.
제 1 항에 있어서, 건조 폐기물이 과립 염 혼합물임을 특징으로 하는 캡슐화 시스템.
제 1 항에 있어서, 건조 폐기물이 가용성 크롬 화합물, 카드뮴, 수은, 납, 질산 나트륨, 질산 칼륨 또는 염화나트륨을 포함함을 특징으로 하는 캡슐화 시스템.
제 1 항에 있어서, 건조 폐기물이 50 내지 60중량%의 질산나트륨을 포함함을 특징으로 하는 캡슐화 시스템.
제 1 항에 있어서, 건조 폐기물이 35중량% 미만의 질산칼륨을 특징으로 하는 캡슐화 시스템.
제 1 항에 있어서, 건조 폐기물이 10중량% 미만의 염화나트륨을 특징으로 하는 캡슐화 시스템.
제 1 항에 있어서, 폴리실록산이 주변조건에서 경화될 수 있음을 특징으로 하는 캡슐화 시스템.
제 1 항에 있어서, 10중량% 미만의 충전제를 더욱 포함함을 특징으로 하는 캡슐화 시스템.
제 8 항에 있어서, 충전제가 철산화물, 탄산칼슘, 마그네슘 실리케이트 또는 칼슘 실리케이트임을 특징으로 하는 캡슐화 시스템.
제 8 항에 있어서, 충전제가 삼출 방지제임을 특징으로 하는 캡슐화 시스템.
고체 폐기물을 예정된 입자 크기로 분쇄하고;
분쇄된 고체 폐기물을 폴리실록산과 조합하여 슬러리를 수득하고;
예정된 시간동안 슬러리를 혼합하고;
슬러리에 촉매를 첨가하고;
예정된 시간동안 슬러리-촉매 혼합물을 혼합하고;
슬러리-촉매 혼합물을 성형하고;
성형된 혼합물을 경화시키는 단계를 포함하는 경화된 폴리실록산 시스템에 캡슐화된 고체 폐기물을 포함하는 폐기물 형태 제조방법.
제 11 항에 있어서, 촉매 첨가전 슬러리에 충전제를 첨가하는 단계를 더욱 포함하는 제조방법.
제 12 항에 있어서, 촉매 첨가전 슬러리에 충전제를 첨가하는 단계가 철산화물, 탄산칼슘, 마그네슘 실리케이트, 칼슘 실리케이트에서 선택된 충전제를 제공하는 단계를 포함함을 특징으로 하는 제조방법.
제 11 항에 있어서, 가용성 크롬화합물, 카드뮴, 수은, 납, 질산 나트륨, 질산 칼륨 또는 염화나트륨에서 선택된 고체 폐기물을 제공하는 단계를 더욱 포함함을 특징으로 하는 제조방법.
제 11 항에 있어서, 성형된 혼합물 경화 단계가 주변 조건에서 폴리실록산을 경화시킴을 특징으로 하는 방법.
제 11 항에 있어서, 10 내지 60중량%의 고체 폐기물을 제공하는 단계를 더욱 포함하는 방법.
