Description
The present invention relates generally to photodiodes, and more particularly to photodiodes utilized in photon sensors.
The image capture device includes an image sensor and an imaging lens. The imaging lens focuses the light onto the image sensor to form an image, which converts the light into electrical signals. These electrical signals are output from the image capture device to other components of the host electronic system. The electronic system may be, for example, a mobile phone, a computer, a digital camera, or a medical device.
There is a continuing need to reduce the size of image sensors so that smaller pixel cells are possible for an image sensor with the same resolution. Another type of photo-detector that can be used in an image sensor or photon detector is a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD). SPAD typically requires a guard ring or isolation to overcome premature edge breakdown and interference problems between adjacent pixels. Known designs that produce such a guard ring or isolator increase the area of each pixel cell and sacrifice the fill factor. Also, as image sensors are miniaturized, the pixel cells contained therein experience increased dark current rates.

It is understood that, in operation,
