다른 선택은, 대체 첨부물들, 즉, 리치 미디어 아이템들의 "썸네일(thumbnail)" 버전들을 생성시키는 것이다. 선택은 다음의 시스템 생성된 이메일 메시지와 함께 사용자에게 전달될 원래의 모든 첨부물(들)에 대해 제공될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 링크는 사용자에게 모든 첨부물을 수신하기 위해 링크를 클릭하도록 알려주는 적절한 텍스트와 함께 썸네일에 포함될 수 있다. 한 실시예에서, 링크의 클릭은 사용자의 개인적인 메시지 센터에 존재하는 완전한 고해상도 이미지로 안내한다.
중간 프리-프로세싱 서비스의 기능은 기능의 희생 또는 최종 사용자에게의 현저한 영향없이 중심 NOC에서보다는 ISP들에서 구현될 수 있다는 것에 주의한다. 이러한 예에서, DNS 정보는 변경되지 않고 남는다. 그러나 이러한 시나리오에서, ISP들은 부가적인 하드웨어 및/또는 소프트웨어에 투자해야 한다고 설득되어야 한다.

입력 메일은 일반적으로 Cisco 및 다른 네트워크 장치 기반 시설들로부터 사용가능한 타입의 로드 평형기(505) 또는 로드-공유 스위치/라우터에 의해 사용가능한 호스트로 라우팅된다. 서버 클러스터(501)는 예를 들면, Oracle과 같은 연관된 데이터베이스 관리 시스템을 수행하는 서버를 포함할 수 있다. 호스트는 사용자 및 사용자 선호들을 식별하기 위해 데이터베이스를 조회한다. 호스트는 이후 사용자 프로파일에 규정된 바와 같은 메시지를 프로세스한다. 스팸 체킹을 위해, 각 호스트는 적절한 스팸 필터의 복제를 수행한다. 바이러스 체킹은 트렌드(Trend)로부터 사용할 수 있는 바이러스 스캐닝 적용을 사용하여 수행될 수 있다.
양호한 이메일들은 사용자 프로파일에 규정된 정보에 따른 하나 또는 그 이상의 어드레스들로 어드레스되고, 송신될 아웃바운드 케일 서버 클러스터로 송신된다. user@isp.com으로 어드레스된 메시지를 전달하기 위해, 우리의 중간 프리-프로세싱 검색 서비스가 user@postini-mail.isp.com을 검색하고 전달한다. 이것은 ISP가 임의의 변화들을 생성시키기 위해 중간의 프리-프로세싱 서비스의 필요 없이 최종 전달 장소를 업데이트 시키는 것을 허용한다. 이메일은 ISP메일 서버(511)로 송신되고 사용자 프로파일에 따른 다른 서버들 또는 게이트웨이들로도 가능하다.
불량 이메일들은 메시지 센터 웹 사이트의 "격리처(in quarantine)"에 보관되고, 공지 이메일이 사용자에게 보내진다. 예시된 실시예에서, 인바운드 메일 서버 클러스터가 파일 저장(521)에 연결된다. 파일 저장은 차례로 웹 서버(523)에 연결된다. 사용자가 웹 서버에 로그온 하면, 웹 페이지는 격리된 메시지들 및/또는 첨부물들의 요약을 디스플레이하기 위한 링크를 포함하여 디스플레이된다. 선택된 아이템을 클릭함으로써, 사용자는 아이템을 볼 수 있고, 첨부물의 형태에 따라 첨부물을 볼 수도 있다. 사용자가 이렇게 선택하는 경우, 사용자는 사용자에게 적절한 경고가 주어진 후 바이러스를 포함하는 것으로 의심되는 아이템을 다운로드하는 것이 허용될 수 있다.
도 5b는 본 발명의 시스템의 대안의 도면을 도시한다.
도 6은 그 사용자에 대한 메시지 전달을 구성하기 위해 사용자에 의해 가득 채워질 수 있고 구성을 변경시키기 위해 다음으로 변경될 수 있는 웹 형식의 스크린 디스플레이의 예를 도시한다. 도시된 예에서, 다음 스크린 디스플레이는 메일 필터 아이템들의 하나가 선택된 후에 도시된다.
본 발명의 다른 특성을 따라, 장치들이 장치들로 최종 사용자 입력의 시간의 메시징 시스템을 자동적으로 주기적으로 알리는 배경 소프트웨어 루틴을 제공할 수 있다. 이러한 정보는 사용자에 의한 빠른 수신의 가능성을 증가시키기 위해 메시지들을 동적으로 라우팅하는데 사용될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 사용자는 일반적으로 사용자의 일반적인 일상에 따라 오전 8-9시, 오후 12-1시 및 6-7시 사이에는 사용자의 휴대 전화로 전달되고, 오전 9-12시, 오후 1-6시에는 사용자의 직장으로 전달되도록 메시지들을 지정할 수 있다. 그러나 사용자가 사무실로부터 멀리 떨어져 있을 수 있는 특별한 오후에는 그 또는 그녀의 휴대 전화가 하나 또는 그 이상의 호출들을 수신하고 생성하며, 정보를 액세스하는 것 등을 위해 사용될 수 있다. 사용자가 "나를 찾으시오(find me)"라는 구성 선택으로 선택되었다면, 이후 이러한 사용 정보는 예를 들면, 사용자의 휴대 전화로 지능적으로 메시지들을 라우팅시키기 위해 사용될 수 있다.
전술한 설명에서 기술된 부가가치 전자 메시징 시스템은 다수의 이메일 박스 커넌드럼을 위한 훌륭한 해법을 제공한다. 디자인에 있어서 사용자 중심은, 시스템이 최종 사용자 구성가능하고 직관적인 웹 메타포를 사용한다. 스케일가능한 아키텍처에 근거하여, 시스템은 존재하는 이메일 계정들로 동작하고 하드웨어 또는 소프트웨어 조합을 필요로 하지 않는다.
도 7은 최종 사용자 구성과 메일 프로세싱을 설명하는 본 발명의 시스템의 한 실시예의 도이다.
본 발명이 그 정신 또는 필수적인 특성들로부터 벗어남이 없이 다른 특정 형식들에서 구현될 수 있다는 것을 당업자는 이해할 것이다. 현재 설명된 실시예들은 따라서 예시된다는 모든 관점에서 고려되고, 제한되지는 않는다. 본 발명의 범위는 앞선 명세서보다 첨부된 청구항들에 의해 지시되며, 그 수단과 동등물들의 범주에 속한 모든 변화들은 그 안에 속한 것이라고 의도된다.

    (a) 상기 목적지 이메일 서버의 IP 어드레스를 포함하는 도메인 네임 서버 등록을 중간 프로세서의 IP 어드레스를 포함하도록 변경함으로써 중간 프로세서를 상기 전자 메시지 전달 경로에 삽입하는 단계;
    (b) 상기 중간 프로세서를 통해서 라우팅된 상기 목적지 이메일 서버에 어드레스된 이메일 메시지 데이터를 상기 중간 프로세서에서 수신하는 단계; 및
    (c) 상기 이메일 메시지 데이터를 상기 중간 프로세서에서 수신하는 동시에, 상기 이메일 메시지 데이터를 프로세싱하며, 상기 이메일 메시지 데이터의 프로세싱이 상기 목적지 이메일 서버로의 전달을 명령하는 경우, 상기 이메일 메시지 데이터를 그 서버로 전달하는 단계를 포함하는, 전자 메시징 서비스 제공 방법.
  65. 제 64 항에 있어서,
    상기 프로세싱은 상기 중간 프로세서에서 저장된 사용자 프로파일에 따라 상기 이메일 메시지 데이터에 대해서 행해지며, 상기 저장된 사용자 프로파일은 상기 이메일 메시지 데이터를 포함하는 이메일 메시지가 어드레스되는 사용자와 연관되는, 전자 메시징 서비스 제공 방법.
