Abstract
촉매입자같은 재료상에 제올라이트를 코팅하는 것은 그 재료를 제올라이트 형성 이전 또는 동시에 고분자 전해질로 처리함으로써 달성될 수 있다. 구리 촉매계는 탄화수소가 촉매에 접근하는 것을 막으면서 좋은 수소 저장량을 보인다.
Description
본 발명은 코팅된 재료의 개선방법 및 그 제품에 관한 것이다. 더욱 상세하게는, 제올라이트 물질(substances)로 재료(materials)를 코팅하는 방법과, 그 방법에 의해 얻어진 제품(product)에 관한 것이다.
종래부터 제올라이트(zeolite)로 미립자 재료를 코팅하는 것이 제안되어 왔다. 예를 들면, 국제 출원 WO 94/05608(BP Chemicals Ltd)에는 수소의 흡수 및/또는 수소와 반응이 가능한 촉매가 개시되어 있다. 그러한 수소 저장 재료는 바람직하게는, 예를 들어 분자체(molecular sieve)로서 작용하여 탄화수소와 같은 큰 분자의 접근을 막아 촉매에 도달하지 못하도록 방지하는 제올라이트와 같은, 다공성 코팅 또는 막을 가지는 금/산화세륨(ceria) 촉매로 구성된다. 이것은 상기 특허 출원에 개시된 탈수소반응의 평형이 이동되어, 결과적으로 목적하는 탈수소된 제품의 수율이 증가하는 결과를 준다. 이러한 반응은 공업적으로 매우 중요하다.
특히, 본 발명자들은 Au/CeO2은 가역적인 흡착에 의해 수소를 저장할 수 있으나, Rh/La2O3-ZrO2 계는 Au/CeO2 에 의해 보유되는 수소량의 5 배를 소비할 수 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 그러나, 그러한 계는 명확한 발열을 나타내지 않는 복잡한 열화학을 가지고, 또한 촉매작용으로 C2 탄화수소를 메탄과 수소로 전환할 수 있어서, 원하는 제품의 전체 수율을 감소시킨다. 본 발명자들은 이제 구리-기재계를 사용하면, Au/ CeO2계보다 20 배의 수소를 저장함을 알게 되었다.
본 발명자들은 그러한 구리 촉매상에 제올라이트 코팅을 부착하기 위해, 상기한 국제 출원의 교시를 따라 행하였으나, 만족할 만한 코팅 제품을 얻을 수 없었다. 본 발명자들은 제올라이트가 반응 혼합물내에 형성되기는 하였으나, 촉매의 입자상에 부착되어 코팅 제품을 생성하지는 않았음을 발견하였다.
문헌에서 찾을 수 있는 다른 코팅 방법은 고체 기질(substrate)과 제올라이트 겔을 간단히 접촉시키는 것(질이 매우 좋은 막을 얻기에는 어려운 방법임)에서부터 펄스 레이저 부착(질이 매우 좋은 막을 형성하나, 극히 고가의 기술이고, 대규모 공정에서 경제적으로뿐만 아니라 기술적으로도 사용되기 어려운 방법임)에 달한다.
최근에는 금으로 도금된 은 플레이트상에 제올라이트 ZSM-5의 얇은 연속 필름을 형성하는 것에 관한 논문이 공개되었다. 그 금 표면은 실란화되고(silanised), 양이온 고분자 용액으로 처리함으로써 표면전하를 반대로 한 다음 ZSM-5 결정의 콜로이드 현탁액으로 처리되었다.(Chem. Commun. 1997,15)
촉매 입자 또는 다양한 종류의 모노리스 본체(monolithic body) 등의 촉매 본체와 같은 재료 위로 제올라이트를 신뢰성있게 코팅하는 능력은 매우 유용할 것이다. 제올라이트는 세공(pores)의 형태 및 크기에 따라 분자체 또는 흡수 분자로서 작용하는 것을 포함하여 많은 바람직한 용도로 사용될 수 있다. 그러나 이후에, 본 발명자들은 제올라이트를 수소 저장 재료 또는 촉매상에 코팅하는 것에 집중하나, 본 발명이 여기에 한정되는 것으로 이해되는 것은 아니다.
본 발명은 합성 제올라이트로 재료를 코팅하는 방법을 제공하는데, 이 방법은 재료 주위의 알칼리성 반응혼합물 내에서 제올라이트를 형성함과 동시에 또는 그 이전에 고분자 전해질로 재료를 처리하는 것을 포함한다.
본 발명자들은 제품 코팅 재료가 제올라이트의 실질적으로 완전한 코팅을 수행하는 것을 발견하였다. 그러한 코팅은 사실상 제올라이트의 미세결정(microcrystallites)인 것으로 생각된다. 그 방법은 이차 코팅, 즉 더 완전한 코팅 또는 더 두꺼운 코팅을 제공하기 위해, 또는 다른 코팅을 부착하는 것이 가능하도록 반복되거나 변경될 수 있다.
본 발명자들에게 특히 흥미로운 재료는 위에서 언급한 바와 같이 수소 저장 재료로도 작용하는 촉매이다. 그 한가지 예는 실리카 및/또는 알루미나같은 산화물 지지체(oxidic support)상에 부착된 산화 구리(예를 들면 Cu로 계산해서 10중량%)이다. 이 촉매는 종래의 방법으로 구리 염 용액을 실리카 담체에 함침하고 하소(calcining)함으로써 제조된다. Cu(II)- Cu(0) 사이클을 이용하는 구리계 촉매 또는 수소 저장 재료는 더욱 선택적인 것일 수 있다. 팔라듐 또는 다른 금속 막 또는 시트, 다른 촉매 입자, 세라믹 재료 또는 금속 산화물 입자 같은 다른 재료들이 지지체로서 사용될 수도 있다.
고분자 전해질들은 수많은 출처로부터 상업적으로 입수가능한 알려진 물질이다. 이들은 현탁 미립자 광물 또는 그와 같은 것을 재생하기 위한 응집 보조제로서 주로 시판된다. 고정된 생촉매(biocatalyst)를 생성하기 위하여, 고분자 전해질 용액 0.01-1 중량%을 사용하여 세라믹 담체를 코팅한 후 담체를 생촉매로 코팅하는 것이 JP01296990에 또한 제안되었다. 본 발명은 상당히 다른 제품을 요한다.
이 때, 바람직한 고분자 전해질은 폴리아크릴아미드인데, Allied Colloids Ltd,(영국)에서 시판된 폴리아크릴아미드 PE-1679가 적당하다. 이것은 바람직하게는 pH 10 내지 11의 알칼리성 용액 내의, 예를 들어 4 중량%의 수용액으로서 이용될 수 있다. 다른 적합한 고분자 전해질은 디알릴 및 디메틸 암모늄 클로라이드의 단독 중합체(homopolymer)이고, 이것은 Allied Colloids Ltd.로부터 역시 구입할 수 있다. 그러한 재료는 양이온성 활성을 가지는 편리한 저 점성 액체이다.
합성 제올라이트 코팅의 형성은 일반적으로 알려진 과정에 따라, 예를 들면, 제올라이트 전구체(precursor)용액 또는 겔을 형성하고, 그 내부에 촉매 입자를 현탁시킴으로써 수행될 수 있다. 이 진행 단계는 주위 온도 또는 예를 들어 약 60 ℃까지의 적절히 상승된 온도에서 수행될 수 있다. 그 다음 혼합물은, 예를 들어, 90-100℃에서 24 시간 동안 고압가열(autoclaving)함으로써 연장된 시간동안 고압가열된다. 현재, 바람직한 제올라이트는 K-3A 제올라이트이고, 이것은 작은 세공(pore)들을 가지는데, 이 세공들은 수소, 산소 및 물 분자를 통과시킬 수 있으나 더 큰 유기 분자는 허용하지 않는다.
물은 제올라이트의 부착(deposition)에서 고려되는 유일한 용매이지만, 더 두꺼운 코팅을 부착시키기 위해 비(非)혼화성 유기 용매를 혼합함으로써 제올라이트의 응집을 돕는 것이 바람직할 수도 있다.
제올라이트 코팅 제품의 구체적 용도에 따라, 다른 제올라이트들이 사용될 수 있는데, 예를 들면, Al/Si비율은 특정 용도에 따라 조절될 수 있다. "제올라이트"라는 용어 내에는 실리칼리트(silicalite)로 알려진 물질이 포함된다. 제올라이트는 I 족 금속과의 이온 교환에 의해 원위치에서(in situ) 변경될 수 있는데, 예를 들면, 나트륨 이온은 Na-4A 제올라이트를 K-3A 제올라이트로 바꾸기 위해 칼륨 이온으로 교환될 수 있다. 이러한 3A 제올라이트는 출원인에게 흥미가 되는 용도에 있어서 개선된 성능 및 개선된 수명을 제공한다. 루비듐 이온 역시 사용될 수 있고, RbBr은 순환 프로세스에서의 개선된 안정성을 가지는 제올라이트 코팅을 제공하는 것으로 보인다.
바람직하게는, 제올라이트 코팅 제품의 형성 이후에, 예를 들어 온도 약 500℃에서, 제품이 안정하게 되고 잔류 탄소 분석치(예를 들어 마이크로 프로브에 의함)를 보이지 않을 때까지 하소(calcined)된다.
본 발명은 다음의 실시예에 의해 설명되는데, 이 실시예는 어떠한 식으로든 본 발명을 제한하지 않는다.
(실시예)
실시예 1
제올라이트 4A가 코팅된 구리/실리카 수소 저장 재료의 제조
아세트산 구리(II) 6.29g을 묽은 암모니아 용액에 용해시켰다. 생성된 구리 용액을 온화한 가열하에 20g의 실리카(3mm 구체, Norton, USA)에 함침시켰다. 그 재료를 100℃에서 건조시키고, 500℃에서 하소하여 실리카 위의 10% 구리(산화물)를 생성하였다.
구리/실리카 구체(5g)를 4 중량% Percol 1697(Allied Colloids Ltd)의 알칼리성 수용액(묽은 암모니아)에 첨가함으로써 전처리를 행하였다. 그 다음 샘플을 묽은 암모니아 내에서 세척하였다.
제올라이트 겔은 소듐 메타실리케이트 용액(52 ml H2O 내 15.51g)을, 빠르게 휘저은 소듐 알루미네이트 용액(52ml의 H2O 내 6.07g)에 첨가함으로써 제조하였다. 고분자 전해질 코팅 구체들을 겔에 첨가하였고, 이 혼합물을 2 시간동안 교반시켰다. 그 다음 혼합물을 PTFE 라이닝된 고압가열 봄브(autoclave bomb)에 옮겼다. 봄브를 밀봉한 다음, 100℃에서 24시간동안 가열하였다. 그 다음 봄브를 실온으로 냉각하고, 개봉하고, 내용물을 묽은 암모니아로 세척하여 여분의 제올라이트를 제거하였다. 그 구체들을 오븐에서 120℃ 에서 건조하고, 최종적으로 500℃에서 2 시간동안 하소하였다.
코팅된 수소 저장 재료의 시험
코팅된 Cu/SiO2 의 수소 저장용량을 시험하기 위해 :
1g 의 재료 샘플을 석영(quartz) 반응기 튜브에 놓은 다음, 유동 공기내에서 500℃로 가열하여 산화시켰다. 그 다음 샘플을 N2로 정화하였다. 500℃의 반응기 온도에서, 헬륨 내 5% 수소의 가스 혼합물을 샘플위로 통과시켰다; 반응기 출구의 조성을 질량 분석계를 사용하여 모니터하였다. 1g 샘플은 수소 20ml를 제거하는 것으로 나타났다.
샘플을 유동공기내에서 재산화시킨 다음 질소로 정화하였다. 500℃의 반응기온도에서, 유동속도 40ml/min에서 3 분동안 에탄을 샘플위로 통과시켰다. 반응기의 출구로부터 가스를 수집하였다: 가스 크로마토그래피에 의한 분석은 0.85ml의 CO2 가 생성된 것을 보였다.
다음 반응을 가정하면:
CuO + H2 -> H2O + Cu
산소원자 하나가 각 수소분자 하나를 제거하는데 사용된다.
다음 반응을 가정하면:
7CuO + C2H6 -> 2CO2 + 3H2O + 7Cu
3.5 산소원자가 1CO2 분자 생성에 사용된다.
따라서, 제올라이트 코팅으로, 에탄보다 수소에 의해 6.7배 더 많은 CuO가 접근될 수 있었다.
실시예 2
제올라이트 3A로 코팅된 Cu/Silica 수소 저장 재료의 제조
실시예 1에서 얻은 제올라이트 4A로 코팅된 재료(5g)을 48시간 동안 유동가능한 염화칼륨(500ml 내의 2M) 용액에 침지시켰다. 그 다음 재료를 여분의 염을 제거하기 위해 물로 충분히 세척하고, 120℃에서 건조시키고, 2 시간동안 500℃에서 하소하였다. 샘플들의 전자 마이크로 프로브 분석(TEM)은 4A 코팅에 존재하는 나트륨 양이온의 ~ 50% 가 더 큰 칼륨 양이온에 의해 교환되었음을 보였다.
코팅을 시험했을 때(실시예 1에서 설명된 바와 같이) 에탄보다 수소에 의해 8배 더 많은 CuO가 접근될 수 있었다.
비교예 1
비코팅된 Cu/Silica의 시험
비코팅 Cu/SiO2 을 실시예 1에 설명된 방법을 이용하여 시험하였다. 수소 흡수량은 22ml이었고, CO2 생성은 6.6ml이었다. 등량의 CuO가 H2 및 에탄에 의해 접근되었다.
비교예 2
고분자 전해질을 사용하지 않는, 제올라이트 4A로 코팅된 샘플의 제조
고분자 전해질로 먼저 처리를 하지 않고 Cu/silica 샘플을 실시예 1 에 설명된 바와 같이 제올라이트로 코팅하였다. 이 샘플의 코팅을 시험했을 때, 에탄보다 H2에 의해 단지 3배 많은 CuO가 접근되었다.
본 발명에 의해 제조된 구리 촉매계는 탄화수소가 촉매에 접근하는 것을 막으면서 좋은 수소 저장량을 가진다.
Claims (20)
- 재료 주위의 알칼리성 반응매질 내에서 제올라이트 형성에 앞서 또는 동시에 재료를 고분자 전해질로 처리하는 것을 포함하며, 합성 제올라이트 코팅을 형성하는 동안 고분자 전해질이 존재하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 합성 제올라이트 코팅을 기질 재료 상에 부착하는 방법.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 제올라이트는 Na-4A 제올라이트인 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 2 항에 있어서, 상기 제올라이트는 이온 교환에 의해, 부착 후 원 위치에서 변경되는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 3 항에 있어서, 상기 제올라이트는 이온 교환에 의해 I족 금속으로 변경되는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 4 항에 있어서, Na-4A 제올라이트는 적어도 부분적으로는 K-3A 제올라이트로 변경되는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 1 항 내지 제 5 항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 상기 고분자 전해질은 폴리아크릴아미드, 또는 디알릴 및 디메틸 암모늄 클로라이드의 단독 중합체인 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 1항 내지 제 5항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 상기 알칼리성 반응매질은 pH가 10 내지 11의 범위에 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
