본 발명에 따라, 프로그램 세그먼트(310,320)는 네트워크(100)의 국(110, 111, 120, 131, 140, 150, 160, 170)에 삽입되거나 선택된다.
만일 방송 네트워크가 위성(120)으로부터 CPE(170)까지 직접 방송하는 유형 이라면, 다운스트림 신호 경로에서의 마지막 삽입국은 위성 업링크 송신기(111)이며, 세그먼트 선택에 대한 식별국은 STB(200)이다. 종래의 지상 방송의 경우에 있어서, 삽입 및 선택 국은 지역 방송사가 될 수 있고, 지역 외 시청자에게 신호를 중계하는 송신기를 포함한다.

예시 세그먼트(400)가 제4도에 도시되었다. 세그먼트(400)는 영상 성분(410)과, 음성 성분(430)과, 문자 성분(420)을 포함한다. 이러한 구성은 의도되는 시청자의 언어학적 특성에 기초하여 하나의 영상 성분에 상이한 음성 및 문자를 조합할 수 있게 한다. 세그먼트(310, 320)는 MPEG와 같은 산업 표준에 따라 엔코딩될 수 있다.
MPEG로 엔코딩된 프로그램 스트림은 패킷 전송 스트림으로 구성된다. 이 패킷은 프로그램의 아날로그 신호를 디지탈 형태로 엔코딩한다 또한, 종래의 디지탈 방법을 이용하여, 패킷을 직접 생성하는 것도 가능하다. MPEG에 대해 상세히 알고자 한다면, "음성, 화상, 멀티미디어 및 하이퍼미디어 정보의 코딩(Coding of Audio, Picture, Multimedia and Hypermedia Information)" [IS0/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG, 멕인네스(McInnes), 편집자 , 1994년]을 참조하라.
제5도는 MPEG 패킷으로 전송된 정보의 콘텐트 및 구조적 관계를 나타낸다. 표준 규격에는 패킷의 구조가 더 상세히 기술되어 있다. 표준은 많은 상이한 패킷 유형을 허용하고 있으나, 본 발명에 관계된 것은 다음의 3가지 유형이다 프로그램 연관(association) 테이블(PAT) 패킷(510), 프로그램 맵(map) 테이블(PMT) 패킷(520) 및 요소 스트림(Elementary Stream; ES) 패킷(530)이다. 각각의 패킷은 패킷 식별자 (PID)에 의해 식별된다.
프로그램 연관 테이블 패킷
프로그램 연관 테이블(PAT)은 프로그렘 번호(PN)와 요소 스트림의 패킷 식별자(PID) 사이의 대응 관계를 제공한다. 각각의 프로그램 방송은 PN으로 식별되며, 프로그램을 구성하는 프로그램 요소 스트림의 패킷은 유일한 PID에 할당된다.
PAT 패킷(510)은 0 값을 가지는 PID[예컨대, PIDO(511)]로 식별된다. PAT 패킷(510)은 PN(예컨대, program_1, Program_2)의 리스트(512)와, 연관된 PMT 패킷 (520)의 PID[예컨대: PMT_PID(513)] 값을 포함한다.
프로그램 맵 테이블 패킷
PMT 패킷(520)은 PMT_PID(521)에 의해 식별되며, 참조되는 프로그램의 프로 그램 콘텐트를 갖는 ES 패킷(ES_PID)(530)의 PID 리스트(521)를 포함한다. 나열된 각각의 ES_PID에 대해, ES 타입(ES_TYPE)(522)와 다른 ES 정보(ES_INFO)(523)가 나 타난다. 완전한 프로그램을 수신하기 위하여, CPE(170)는 프로그램과 관련된 모든 패킷을 수신하고 처리하여야 한다. 관련 PAT 및 PMT 테이블(510)에 포함된 것 보다는 PID로 식별된 패킷은 디코딩 동안 무시될 것이다.
요소 스트림 패킷
ES_PID(531)에 의해 식별된 ES 패킷(530)은 패이로드(532)를 전송한다. 패이로드(532)는 음성, 영상, 사설 정보와 같은 프로그램 구성물(program material)의 어떤 요소를 표현하는 디지탈 신호를 포함한다. ES 패킷(530)은 콘텐트와 상응하는 율로 프로그램 신호를 엔코딩한다. 일반적으로 음성이나 영상 문자 신호 보다는 영상 신호가 더 높은 대역폭을 필요로 한다.
엔코딩 및 디코딩 동안의 프로그램 신호의 동기화는 프로그램 클록 기준 (PCR)에 의해 유지된다. PCR의 값은 공통 시간 베이스에 대하여 프로그램의 다양한 요소 스트림을 동기화한다. 프로그램 비트 스트림에 PCR 간을 저장하는 데 사용되는 방법은 MPEG 표준으로 규정된다. 예컨대, 이 표준은 PCR이 100 밀리세컨드를 초과하지 않는 간격으로 프로그램 신호에 포함되는 것을 요구한다.
프로그램이 방송 네트워크(100)상에서 다운스트림으로 진행될 때, 프로그램을 구성하기 위해 프로그램 세그먼트(520,530)를 조합(예컨대, 삽입 및 선택)하는데 사용될 수 있는 여러 가지 방법이 있다 이러한 방법들 중 어떤 것은 MPEG "스플라이싱(splicing)"이나 변형된 셋탑 박스를 필요로 할 것이다. 나머지 다른 방법들은 최소의 추가 하드웨어나 프로세싱으로써 기존 네트워크에 적용될 수 있다. 이하에서 이러한 방법들을 더 상세히 기술한다.
다중 프로그램 방법

제6도에 도시된 예를 들어보면, program_1의 은퇴한 부유한 시청자는 ES_PID_1로 식별된 패킷으로 기본 영상 스트림(610)과 ES_PID_2(621)로 식별된 기본 음성 스트림(620)을 시청할 것이다. 영상 ES_PID_1 및 음성 ES_PID_2 패킷은 program_1의 베이스 세그먼트로 구성된다. 은퇴한 부유한 시청자에 대하여, program_1의 필 세그던트, 예컨대 랑고는 ES_PID_3(631) 및 ES_PID_4(641)로 식별된 패킷을 갖는 영상 및 음성 요소 스트림으로부터 생성될 수 있다.

동적으로 변경된 PID 방법에 있어서, 요소 스트림의 ES__PID(531)는 프로그램이 방송될 때 동적으로 변경된다. program_1의 시청자의 STB(200)는 ES_PID_3 및 ES_PID_4를 갖는 ES 패킷이 디코딩되어야 한다는 것을 나타내는 PMT 패킷을 수신한다. 그리나, 필 세그먼트 동안, ES 패킷의 ES_PID는 어떤 다른 번호, 예컨대 PID_21 및 PID_22로 변경된다. 제7도에 도시된 것과 같은, 다른 실시예에 있어서, 본 발명은 종래의 아날로 그 신호를 이용하는 프로그램 방송에 운용되도록 적용될 수 있다. 아날로그 네트워 크에 있어서, 제1 시청자를 대상으로 하는 베이스 및 필러 세그먼트(710,720)는 제 1 회선 또는 채널(700)을 이용하여 네트워크로 전송된다. 제2 시청자를 대상으로 하는 필러 세그먼트(730)는 제2 회선 또는 채널(701)을 이용하여 전송된다.
필러 브레이크 동안, 제2 시청자용 가입자 댁내 장비에서의 프로그램 수신은 제2 채널(701)로 지정된다. 필러 세그먼트의 끝에서, 수신은 제1 채널(700)로 다시 전환된다. 필 및 베이스 사이의 천이를 나타내는 데 사용된 신호는 아날로그 프레 임 동기화 신호로 엔코딩될 수 있거나, 표준 아날로그 RF 텔레비전 방송 중 이용되 는 블랭킹 신호로 엔코딩될 수 있다.
제8도는 단순한 형태로 나타낸 본 발명의 일반적 장치 및 운용을 요약한 것이다. 제8도에 있어서, 2개의 프로그램 콘텐트 소오스, 예컨대 프로그램 세그먼트가 있다. 방송사(BC)는 제1 세그먼트(A 및 B)를 생성한다. 케이블 운용자(CO) (820) 는 제2 세그먼트(C 및 D)(812)를 생성한다. 어떤 세그먼트들[예컨대, 세그먼트 C 및 D)은 동시에 생성된다. 세그먼트를 표현하는 신호는 공통 시간 베이스, 예컨대 MPEG로 엔코딩된 비트 스트림의 프로그램 클록 기준 값 또는 아날로그 텔레비전 신호의 크롬 버스트(chrome burst) 신호에 동기화 된다. 독립적으로 생성된 신호들 사이의 일시적 동기화를 유지하기 위해, 콘텐트가 제공되지 않았을 때(예컨대 제8도의 평행으로 음영 표시된 영역)의 시간 동안 아이들(idle) 또는 "널" 신호(813)가 전송될 수 있다.
네트워크(100)는 프로그램을 STB(831, 832, 833)로 전송하는 데 사용된다. 전송중에, 세그먼트는 식별된 프로그램 콘텐트, 네트워크 및 STB 인구 통계에 기초하여 선택적으로 조합될 수 있다. 조합은 교대로 세그먼트를 삽입하거나 추가의 다운스트림 분배를 위한 특정 세그먼트만을 선택함으로써 구현될 수 있다.
예컨대, 헤드 엔드 또는 스트리트 박스(HE/SB)(840)는 STB(831)가 STB (832,833)와는 상이한 콘텐트를 수신하도록 세그먼트를 조합한다. 또한, STB(832) 역시 비록 STB(831)와 동일한 스트리트 박스, 헤드 엔드 또는 위성자 "접속" 되었다고 할지라도, 자신에 접속된 텔레비전용의 상이한 콘텐트를 선택할 수 있다.

Claims (12)

  1. 네트워크를 통해 복수 개의 상이한 가입자 댁내 장비(CPE)에 프로그램을 방 송하는 방법에 있어서,
    제1 식별된 콘텐트를 갖는 상기 프로그램의 제1 세그먼트를 생성하는 단계와,
    제2 식별된 콘텐트를 갖는 상기 프로그램의 제2 세그먼트 -상기 제2 세그먼트의 적어도 하나는 다른 제2 세그먼트와 동시에 생성되며, 상기 동시에 생성된 제2세그먼트들은 서로 상이한 제2 식별 콘텐트를 포함함- 를 생성하는 단계와,
    상기 제1 및 제2 세그먼트를 상기 네트워크를 통해 상기 프로그램으로서 상기 가입자 댁내 장비에 전송하는 단계와,
    상기 프로그램을 전송하는 동안 상기 제1 및 제2 세그먼트를 선택적으로 병합하는 단계를 포함하고,
    상기 프로그램은 상기 제1 및 제2 세그먼트를 교대로 포함하는 것이고,
    상기 제1 세그먼트는 동시에 생성된 상기 제2 세그먼트들 -각각 상이한 제2식별된 콘텐트를 가짐- 과 일시적으로 인접하는 것이고,

    상기 복수의 요소 프로그램 스트림을 패킷 식별자를 각각 갖는 복수의 전송 패킷으로 분할하는 단계

  5. 제4항에 있어서,
    a) 프로그램 연관 테이블 패킷, 프로그램 맵 테이블 패킷 또는 요소 스트림 패킷으로서 상기 복수의 전송 패킷을 식별하는 단계를 더 포함하고,
    상기 각각의 프로그램 연관 테이블 패킷은 프로그램 번호 및 연관된 요소 스트림의 패킷 식별자를 포함하는 것이고,

    상기 제1 및 제2 세그먼트를 전송하기 전에, 상기 네트워크 및 가입자 댁내 장비의 상기 인구 통계 정보를 인구 통계 프로필 데이타베이스로서 상기 메모리에 분배하는 단계

    a) 방송 프로그램을 제1 및 제2 세그먼트로 분할하는 수단으로서, 상기 프로 그램의 상기 제1 및 제2 세그먼트는 결합(couple)하지 않고 인접(adjacent)하는 방식으로 일시적으로 배열되고, 상기 프로그램 세그먼트들은 식별된 콘텐트를 포함하고, 상기 제2 세그먼트의 적어도 하나는 다른 제2 세그먼트와 동시성이 있고, 상기 동시성이 있는 제2 세그먼트들은 각각 상이한 콘텐트를 포함하고, 상기 프로그램은 각각 상이한 콘텐트를 가지는 상기 동시성이 있는 제2 세그먼트와 일시적으로 교대로 인접하는 제1 세그먼트를 포함하는 것인 수단과,
