Claims (10)
- 액정 디스플레이 장치(10)에 있어서, 상기 액정 디스플레이 장치(10)로 진입하는 광을, 선택된 제1방향(16a)에서 선형으로 편광하기 위한 편광축(22)을 갖는 입사 편광자(18)와; 상기 입사 편광자(18)에 인접하여 거의 평행하게 배치되고, 상기 선형으로 편광된 진입 광을, 선택된 타원율(β)을 가지며 타원형으로 편광된 광으로 변환하는 제1복굴절 필름(26)과; 상기 제1복굴절 필름(26)에 인접하여 평행하게 배치된 트위스트 네마틱 액정 셀(12)을 구비하는데, 상기 액정 셀(12)은 상기 선택된 제1방향(16a)로부터 선택된 제2방향(16e)으로 상기 액정 셀에 진입하는 상기 타원형으로 편광된 광을 회전시킬 수 있으며, 상기 액정 셀(12)이 여기되지 않은 오프 상태일 경우 상기 광에 부여된 회전각이 상기 액정 셀(12)의 비틀림 각에 대응하는 것이고; 상기 액정 셀(12)에 인접하여 평행하게 배치되고, 상기 액정 셀(12)로부터 방출되는 타원형으로 편광된 광을, 상기 선택된 제2방향(16e)에서 선형으로 편광시킨 광으로 변환시키는 제2복굴절 필름(28)과; 상기 제2복굴절 필름(28)에 인접하여 평행하게 배치되고, 상기 선택된 제2방향(16e)에 대해 직각으로 배치된 편광축을 갖는 출사 편광자(20)를 구비하며, 상기 트위스트 네마틱 액정 셀(12)은 상기 선택된 타원율(β)과 동일한 정상 모드의 타원율을 가지며, 상기 제1 및 제2복굴절 필름 각각은 모든 가시파장에 대해 최대 100nm의 리타데이션을 가짐으로써, 상기 액정 셀(12)이 오프 상태일 때 상기 제2복굴절 필름(28)으로부터 방출되는 광이 소멸되게 하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 액정 셀(12)의 정상 모드 타원율은 선택된 광의 파장이 상기 출사 편광자(20)에 의해 완전하게 차단되도록 선택되는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 제1 및 제2복굴절 필름(26, 28)은 각각 유리 기판과, 상기 유리 기판을 가로질러 연장되고 안정적인 리타데이션을 제공하도록 자외선으로 경화가능한 접착제에 의해 상기 기판에 접착되는 중합체 재료 시트를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 제1 및 제2복굴절 필름(26, 28)은 각각 고정축(30, 32)을 가지며, 상기 고정축(30, 32)은 각각 동일한 방향으로 배향되는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제4항에 있어서, 상기 제1복굴절 필름의 고정축(30)은 상기 입사 편광자(18)와 선택된 제1방향(16A) 각각의 편광축(22)에 대해 약 45°로 배향되며, 상기 제2복굴절 필름의 고정축(32)은 상기 출사 편광자(20)와 선택된 제2방향(16e) 각각의 편광축(24)에 대해 약 45°로 배향되는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 제1 및 제2복굴절 필름(26, 28)은 각각 약 25nm의 리타데이션을 갖는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 제2복굴절 필름(28)은 상기 선택된 타원율(β)을 갖는 광을 선형으로 편광된 광으로 변환하기 위해 선택된 복굴절율을 갖는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 액정 셀(12)은 약 90°의 비틀림 각을 갖는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 액정 셀(12)은 수퍼-트위스트 네마틱 액정 재료로 이루어진 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플래이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 액정 셀(12)은 선택된 파장의 광이 상기 출사 편광자(24)에 의해 완전하게 차단되도록 하기 위해 구츠-테리 최소 조건을 만족하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
