Abstract

본 발명은 활성 매트릭스 방식의 액정표시 소자에 관한 것으로, 특히 판넬을 구성하는 화소가 빛이 지나갈 수 있는 개구부와 지나갈 수 없는 격벽으로 이루어져 있어서 격벽이 검게 표시되고, 이로 인하여 전체 화면이 점들로 이루어져 있는 모습이 확연히 드러나게 되어 화면이 거칠게 보이는 현상을 복굴절판의 복굴절성을 이용하여 해결하기 위한 것이다.
상기와 같은 본 발명의 목적은 빛이 조사되는 측으로 부터 제 1 편광자, 제 1 유리기판, 액정, 제 2 유리기판, 제 2 편광자가 순차적으로 층을 형성하고 있는 액정판넬과, 상기 액정판넬의 제 2 편광자를 통하여 입사되는 광을 복굴절시키는 제 1 복굴절판과, 상기 제 1 복굴절판을 투과한 광파장은 1/4로 감소시키는 λ/4 파장판을 투과한 광을 복굴시키는 제 2 복굴절판을 순차적으로 구성하며, 특히 상기 제 1 복굴절판의 광학축 방향은 액정판넬 화소의 수평방향과 일치하도록 하고, 상기 λ/4파장판의 광학축 방향은 액정판넬 화소의 수평방향과 일치하거나 수직하도록 하며, 상기 제 2 복굴절판의 광학축 방향은 액정판넬의 수직방향과 일치하도록 한다.

본 발명은 활성 매트릭스 방식의 액정표시 소자에 관한 것으로, 특히 판넬을 구성하는 화소가 빛이 지나갈 수 있는 개구부와 지나갈 수 없는 격벽으로 이루어져 있어서 격벽이 검게 표시되고, 이로 인하여 전체 화면이 점들로 이루어져 있는 모습이 확연히 드러나게 되어 화면이 거칠게 보이는 현상을 복굴절판의 복굴절성을 이용하여 해결하기 위한 것이다.
종래 활성 매트릭스 방식의 액정판넬은 첨부한 도면 제 1 도에 도시한 바와같이, 왼쪽에서 빛이 진행할 때 제 1 편광판(1), 제 1 유리기판(2), 액정(3), 제 2 유리기판(4), 제 2 평광판(5)의 순으로 단면을 구성하고 있으며, 상기 제 1 유리기관(2)의 액정층 면상에는 제 2 도와 같은 화소들을 형성하여 입사된 광을 각 화소부와 접속되어 있는 박막트랜지스터(Thin Film Transistor ; TFT)에서 독립적으로 스위칭 하므로서 화상을 표시하고 있다.
이와 같은 액정판넬의 화상표시방식을 액티브 매트릭스 방식이라 한다.
그러나 이와 같이 구성된 액정표시소자에서 입사되는 빛은 각 화소영역(2a)으로만 투과되고, 격벽부(2b)는 빛이 투과되지 못하므로, 확대비율에 따른 정도의 차이는 있지만 격벽이 화면상에서 검게 나타나게 되고, 이로 인하여 화면이 점으로 이루어져 있는 모습이 확연히 드러나서 거칠게 보이는 문제점이 있었다.
따라서 본 발명에서는 복굴절판의 복굴절성을 이용하여 격벽을 제거하므로서 상기의 문제점을 해결하도록 한 액정표시소자를 제공하고자 한다.
상기와 같은 본 발명의 목적은 빛이 조사되는 측으로 부터 제 1 편광판, 제 1 유리기판, 액정, 제 2 유리기판, 제 2 편광판이 순차적으로 층을 형성하고 있는 액정판넬과, 상기 액정판넬의 제 2 편광판을 통하여 입사되는 광을 복굴절시키는 제 1 복굴절판과, 상기 제 1 복굴절판을 투과한 광을 원편광시키는 λ/4파장판과, 상기 λ/4파장판을 투과한 광을 복굴절시키는 제 2 복굴절판을 순차적으로 구성하고, 특히 상기 제 1 복굴절판의 광학축 방향은 액정판넬 화소의 수평방향과 일치 하도록 하고, 상기 λ/4파장판의 광학축 방향은 액정판넬 화소의 수평방향과 45도를 이루도록 하며, 상기 제 2 복굴절판의 광학축 방향은 액정판넬의 수직방향과 일치하도록 하므로써 달성될 수 있다.
첨부한 도면 제 3 도는 본 발명 액정표시소자의 단면도로서, 화상을 표시하기 위하여 빛이 조사되는 좌측으로 부터 제 1 편광판(1), 제 1 유리기판(2), 액정(3), 제 2 유리기판(4), 제 2 편광판(5)으로 이루어진 기존의 액정판넬과, 상기 액정판넬 상에 제 1 복굴절판(6), λ/4파장판(7), 제 2 복굴절판(8)이 순차적으로 층을 형성하고 있다.
첨부한 도면 제 4도는 본 발명 액정표시소자 판넬을 구성하는 화소, 복굴절판의 광학축 및 편광판 축의 관계설명도로서, x를 화소의 수평방향, x'를 제 1 복굴절판의 광학축, y를 화소의 수직방향, y'를 제 2 복굴절판의 광학축, z를 제 2 편광판의 편광축 방향이라 할 때, 제 2 편광판(5)의 편광축 방향(z)은 화소의 수평방향(X)과 45°의 각을 이루고 있으며, 제 1 복굴절판(6)의 광학축(X')은 화소의 수평방향(X)과 일치하고, λ/4파장판(7)의 광학축은 45도 방향이 되도록 하고, 제 2 복굴절판(8)의 광학축(y')은 화소의 수직방향(y)과 일치한다.
여기서 사용되는 복굴절판에 의한 광의 분리는 첨부한 도면 제 5 도를 참조하여 설명한다.
비편광된 광이 복굴절판에 입사되면, 이 입사된 빛은 상광선(ordinary ray;O로 표기)과 이상광선(extraordinary ray:e로 표기)으로 분리되어 나온다.
이때 상광선(O)과 이상광선(e)의 편광방향은 상호 수직이며, 상기 두 광선의 분리폭(d)은 복굴절판의 두께(t)에 비례한다.
상기와 같은 구성과 특성을 갖는 본 발명 액정표시소자의 동작 및 효과를 첨부한 도면 제 6 도를 참조하여 설명하면 다음과 같다.
먼저, 제 2 편광판(5)을 투사한 빛은 (가)와 같이 각 화소의 개구부는 통화 하고 격벽부에서는 차단된다.
상기 제 2 편광판(5)을 지나서 제 1 복굴절판(6)에 입사되어 복굴절된 빛은(나)와 같이 상광선과 이상광선으로 분리되어 상광선은 직진하고, 이상광선은 제 1 복굴절판(6)의 광학축 방향인 화소의 수평방향으로 이동하여 진행한다.
이때, 상기 제 1 복굴절판(6)의 두께 t를 조절하여 개구부 수평간격(gh)만큼 이상광선이 이동되도록 한다.
상기 단계에서의 광의 분포상황은 수직격벽이 모두 제거된 상태임을 알 수 있다.
그리고 상기 제 1 복굴절판(6)을 투과하여 λ/4편광판(7)으로 입사된 광은 좌우원편광된 광이 만들어 진다.
따라서 제 6 도의 (c)와 같이 원편광된 광이 제 2 복굴절판(8)을 지나가면, 상기 제 2 복굴절판(8)의 광학축인 화소의 수평방향으로 또다시 이상광선이 분리 이동되어 나아가며 상광선은 직진한다.
그러므로 입사된 광이 상기 제 2 복굴절판(8)을 지나왔을때에는, 수평격벽마저 제거됨을 알 수 있다.
물론 이 경우에도 제 2 복굴절판(8)의 두께를 조절하여 이상광선의 분리폭은 개구부의 수직간격(gv)과 같아지도록 한다.
이상에서 설명한 바와 같이 종래의 활성 매트릭스 방식의 액정판넬의 화상 표시에서는 화소의 격벽에 의한 광차단으로 화상이 거칠게 보이지만, 본 발명 액정표시 소자에서는 격벽에 해당되는 부분에도 복굴절에 의하여 광이 투과되도록 하므로써, 사용자들에게 깨끗한 화상을 제공할 수 있게 된다.

Claims (5)

  1. 빛이 조사되는 측으로 부터 제 1 편광판, 제 1 유리기판, 액정, 제 2 유리기판, 제 2 편광판이 순차적으로 층을 형성하고 있는 액정판넬과, 상기 액정판넬의 제 2 편광판을 통하여 입사되는 광을 복굴절시키는 제 1 복굴절판과, 상기 제 1 복굴절판을 투과한 광을 원편광시키는 λ/4파장판과, 상기 λ/4파장판을 투과한 광을 복굴절시키는 제 2 복굴절판을 순차적으로 구성한 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시소자.
  2. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 제 1 복굴절판의 광학축 방향은 액정판넬 화소의 수평방향과 일치하도록 한 것을 특징으로 하는액정표시소자.
  3. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 λ/4파장판의 광학축 방향은 액정판넬 화소의 수평방향과 일치하도록 구성한 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시소자.
  4. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 λ/4파장판의 광학축 방향은 액정판넬 화소의 수평방향과 45도를 이루도록 구성한 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시소자.
  5. 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 제 2 복굴절판의 광학축 방향은 액정 판넬의 수직 방향과 일치하도록 구성한 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시소자.
