Abstract
Description
本発明は、核医学診断装置に係り、さらに詳しくは、SPECTやPETに使用するガンマ線検出器とガンマ線再構築方法に関する。
ガンマ線検出器は、放射線検出器であり、核医学診断において患者に与えられた放射性医薬品から放出されたガンマ線(γ線)を測定する装置である。
従来の放射線検出器は、コリメータ、NaI(ヨウ化ナトリウム)、及びPMT(光電子増幅管)が積層配置されたものであり、平行な細穴を開けた鉛製のコリメータによって、穴の方向から来たガンマ線だけがNaIの単結晶に到達し、そこでガンマ線のエネルギー付与に比例した強さの蛍光を発し、この光をPMTで検出し、ガンマ線の強度と位置を検出するものである。
また、PET(陽電子放射線断層撮影装置)は、ポジトロンECTの略であり、崩壊時に陽電子(ポジトロン)を放出する放射性同位元素を用い、陽電子が電子と結びつく際に反対方向に飛び出した2個の光子(フォトン)を、2個の検出器で次々と検出して、ガンマ線の入射方向を求め、断層像を作成する装置である。
そのため、この発明では、図1に示すように、放射線検出器51、52が、放射線入射面51a、52a側に配置され、シングルフォトンに起因して放出された140keVのエネルギーを有するガンマ線を吸収して検出する半導体検出器ユニット53a、53bと、半導体検出器ユニット53a、53bを挟んで放射線入射面51a、52a側とは反対側に配置され、ポジトロンに起因して放出された511keVのエネルギーを有するガンマ線を検出するシンチレーション検出器ユニット54a、54bとを備えている。
そのため、この発明では、図2に示すように、64個のシンチレータ61が、密着されて結合されシンチレータ群62が構成され、各シンチレータ61には、1対1に対応する68個のアバランシェフォトダイオード(APD)63からなるAPDアレー64が光学的に結合されている。シンチレータ群62に入射したガンマ線は、相互作用により吸収された位置に応じたシンチレータで発光し、その発光は周囲のシンチレータに拡散され、APDアレー64の各APD63で光量が検出される。各APD63で検出され、光/電変換された検出データは入射位置演算回路65に与えられ、各検出データに基づき光量分布の重心を求めてガンマ線の入射位置が求められる。
また、シンチレータで吸収するガンマ線量を向上させるために、被験者に投与する放射性物質の量を増やさざるを得なかった。そのため、被験者の放射線被ばくが問題となるおそれがあった。
本発明の第2の目的は、低コストでガンマ線の検出位置精度を高めることができるガンマ線検出器とガンマ線再構築方法を提供することにある。
前記ガンマ線に対して、コンプトン散乱の確率の高いコンプトン散乱物質からなるコンプトン散乱用シンチレータと、
前記2種のシンチレータにおいて同時計測したガンマ線のエネルギー吸収量を合算し被検体から放出されたガンマ線を再構築するエネルギー検出装置を備え、
前記2種のシンチレータは、前記ガンマ線の全エネルギーを吸収又はコンプトン散乱するように、多層に配列されている、ことを特徴とするガンマ線検出器が提供される。
コンプトン散乱用シンチレータと光学的に結合し該コンプトン散乱用シンチレータの発光量を検出するコンプトン散乱発光量検出器と、
前記各発光量から同一のガンマ線によるエネルギー量を演算する演算装置とからなる。
前記演算装置は、前記複数の光量検出器の光量分布から、ガンマ線の入射位置を演算する。
図3Aと図3Bは、医療用検出器を開発する上で重要なガンマ線と物質の相互作用を示す図である。図3Aは、ガンマ線の吸収を示しており、ガンマ線1は、物質2中で電子と衝突し全てのエネルギーを付与する。図3Bは、ガンマ線のコンプトン散乱を示しており、ガンマ線1は、物質3中で電子4と衝突し、一部のエネルギーを付与する。
これまでに開発されてきたSPECT、PETでは、全て「吸収」の過程に注目した放射線検出器を用いている。物質(シンチレータ)でガンマ線1のエネルギー全てが付与されない「コンプトン散乱」の過程(図3B)では、物質3で検出されたガンマ線のエネルギーが、体内から放出されるガンマ線より低くなる。そのため、検出されたガンマ線が真に体内から放出されたガンマ線かどうか識別できないために、従来はコンプトン散乱はバックグランド源として扱われてきた。
しかし、人体から放出されるガンマ線1のエネルギー(〜1MeV領域)で、最も優勢な過程は「コンプトン散乱」である(後述するように反応確率が「吸収」より1桁以上多い)。
以下、本発明の放射線検出器を「ガンマ線検出器」と呼び、本発明の検出方法を「ガンマ線再構築方法」と呼ぶ。
この図において、本発明のガンマ線検出器10は、吸収用シンチレータ12、コンプトン散乱用シンチレータ14、及びエネルギー検出装置16を備える。
ガンマ線1に対して吸収確率の高い吸収物質は、好ましくは無機材料であり、例えばNaI(ヨウ化ナトリウム)である。後述する図9Aにおいて、NaIの1MeVのガンマ線に対する反応確率は、約3.4×10−3である。
コンプトン散乱の確率の高いコンプトン散乱物質は、好ましくは有機材料であり、特に炭素分子と水素分子からなる質量数の小さい有機材料であるのが好ましい。かかる有機材料のシンチレータとして、プラスチックシンチレータやp−terphenylが該当する。後述する図9Bにおいて、プラスチックシンチレータの1MeVのガンマ線に対する反応確率は、約6.7×10−2である。
この図において、エネルギー検出装置16は、吸収発光量検出器17、コンプトン散乱発光量検出器18、及び演算装置20からなる。
なお、被検者に投与した放射性物質からのガンマ線1の発生頻度を低く抑えることにより、異なる位置から同時に発生するガンマ線1を大幅に抑制することができる。従って、同一のガンマ線1であるか否かは、同時に検出された2以上の検出器17,18の各発光が、同一のガンマ線1によるものとして判断することができる。
また、この例において、演算装置20は、複数の光量検出器18aの検出光量から、ガンマ線1の入射位置を演算するようになっている。この演算手段は後述する。
図5Aに示すように、ガンマ線1が吸収用シンチレータ12に入射しここで吸収された場合には、その検出エネルギーが元のガンマ線1のエネルギーと一致し、体内から放出されたガンマ線1であることを確認することができる。
また、図5Bに示すように、ガンマ線1がコンプトン散乱用シンチレータ14でコンプトン散乱し、次いで吸収用シンチレータ12に入射しここで吸収されたことが同時計測された場合には、両方のエネルギーを足し合わせることにより、元のガンマ線1のエネルギーを再構築することができる。
同様に、2回以上のコンプトン散乱が生じる場合でも、散乱されたコンプトン電子のエネルギーと吸収されたガンマ線のエネルギーを足し合わせてガンマ線1のエネルギーを再構築するので、ガンマ線の検出数が加算され、検出効率の向上となる。
図6は、多層に配列した本発明のガンマ線検出器の概要図である。この図において、ガンマ線1は下方から入射し、本発明のガンマ線検出器を構成する2種のシンチレータはガンマ線1に対して厚さ方向に3層に配置されている。多層に配列するほどガンマ線とシンチレータの相互作用の確率が高くなるため、再構築できるガンマ線の検出数が増え、検出効率の向上となる。
これまで質量数が小さな分子で構成される蛍光板(プラスチックシンチレータやp−terphenylなどの有機シンチレータ)は、ガンマ線の吸収に対する感度が低くコンプトン散乱に対する感度が優勢であるために、従来は医療用放射線検出器として扱われてこなかった。
しかし、このコンプトン散乱に対する感度は、PET用検出器でよく使われる無機シンチレータ(BGOシンチレータやGSOシンチレータ)におけるガンマ線の吸収感度より1桁以上高い(後述する図9A,図9Bの例で、約3.4×10−3に対し約6.7×10−2)。
そこで、本発明では、ガンマ線の吸収感度に依る検出器の感度向上を目指すだけではなく、吸収とコンプトン散乱に対する両感度を活かすため、複種(有機、無機)の蛍光板を幾何学的に配置した簾状配置の検出器とした。
また、プラスチックシンチレータやp−terphenylからなる有機材料で構成されたシンチレータ(有機シンチレータ)は、加工が容易であり安価であるので、従来のNaIの結晶に比較して、実用に向けた検出器の大型化と低投資による量産化が可能になる。医療用検出器の開発は、技術的なブレイクスルーとなり波及効果も大きい。またガンマ線再構築方法は、放射線物理や医学物理のみならず素粒子物理や環境放射線物理等の様々な分野において放射線計測の基礎としての普遍性を持つ。
シンチレータの蛍光源を算出する方法として、従来から特許文献2に開示されている重心法が使われている。この重心法とは、蛍光板の左右に設置した検出器(例えば、光電子増倍管)で得られた光量の比から重心を求め位置を算出する方法である。しかし、この方法は、光源の“相対位置“(左右の検出器のどちら側で蛍光したのか)しか求めることができない。
この従来方法と異なり、直接光源の絶対位置を算出する新たらしい分析法(以下、「蛍光位置演算方法」という)を以下に述べる。これは、炭素や水素のような質量数が小さな分子で構成される有機シンチレータ(例えば、プラスチックシンチレータやp−terphenyl)を使うと、質量数が小さいのでより性能が発揮される。
図8Bではシンチレータ14の側面に密接して複数の光量検出器18aを一定の間隔で配列しているが、複数の光量検出器18aは、例えば光ファイバーを光学的に介して離れた位置に配列してもよい。ここで、iは検出器の番号を示す。xiは光源からi番目の検出器までのx軸に対する距離、yは光源から検出器の配置された側面までの距離を示す。
ここで重要なのは、同じ面に配置されている検出器の立体角において、yは検出器の場所(i=1,8)に依存することなく同じである。またxiは、光源から検出器(i=1)までの距離x1と検出器間の距離dを用いることにより式(2)のように表すことができる。
式(1)、(2)、(3)をまとめると、側面で得られる光量分布は、3つの変数(A,x1,y)を用いて式(4)で表すことができる。
この式(4)を、実際に検出器(i=1,8)で得られた光量分布Piに対してフィッテングすることにより、蛍光の絶対位置(x1,y)を求めることが可能になる。
図9Aと図9Bはガンマ線との反応確率を示す図である。各図において横軸は体内から放出されるガンマ線のエネルギー、縦軸は単位密度あたりの反応確率を示している。
図9Aは現在、放射線検出器で最もよく使われている蛍光板のヨウ化ナトリウム(NaI)、図9Bは、プラスチックシンチレータである。太線は、全相互作用の和、破線は吸収過程、細線はコンプトン散乱の過程を示している。
人体から放出されるエネルギー領域(〜1MeV)では、吸収過程を使うヨウ化ナトリウムの反応確率はA点である。コンプトン散乱を使うプラスチックシンチレータの反応確率はB点である。理想的な検出器であれば、約20倍の感度向上が見込まれる。同じように他の無機シンチレータ(BGOやGSO等)と比較した場合でも5から10倍程度感度向上は見込まれる。
Claims (7)
- 被検体から放出されるエネルギー領域のガンマ線に対して、吸収確率の高い吸収物質からなる吸収用シンチレータと、
前記ガンマ線に対して、コンプトン散乱の確率の高いコンプトン散乱物質からなるコンプトン散乱用シンチレータと、
前記2種のシンチレータにおいて同時計測したガンマ線のエネルギー吸収量を合算し被検体から放出されたガンマ線を再構築するエネルギー検出装置を備え、
前記2種のシンチレータは、前記ガンマ線の全エネルギーを吸収又はコンプトン散乱するように、多層に配列されている、ことを特徴とするガンマ線検出器。 - 前記吸収用シンチレータとコンプトン散乱用シンチレータは、同一面内及び積層方向において、交互に又はランダムに配置される、ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のガンマ線検出器。
- 前記コンプトン散乱物質は、炭素分子と水素分子からなる質量数の小さい有機材料である、ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のガンマ線検出器。
- 前記エネルギー検出装置は、吸収用シンチレータと光学的に結合し該吸収用シンチレータの発光量を検出する吸収発光量検出器と、
コンプトン散乱用シンチレータと光学的に結合し該コンプトン散乱用シンチレータの発光量を検出するコンプトン散乱発光量検出器と、
前記各発光量から同一のガンマ線によるエネルギー量を演算する演算装置とからなる、ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のガンマ線検出器。 - 前記コンプトン散乱発光量検出器は、コンプトン散乱用シンチレータの所定面に所定間隔で光学的に配列された複数の光量検出器からなり、
前記演算装置は、前記複数の光量検出器の光量分布から、ガンマ線の入射位置を演算する、ことを特徴とする請求項4に記載のガンマ線検出器。 - 被検体から放出されるエネルギー領域のガンマ線に対して、吸収確率の高い吸収物質からなる吸収用シンチレータと、コンプトン散乱の確率の高いコンプトン散乱物質からなるコンプトン散乱用シンチレータとを、ガンマ線のエネルギーを吸収又はコンプトン散乱するように多層に配列し、前記2種のシンチレータにおいて同時計測したガンマ線のエネルギー吸収量を合算して被検体から放出されたガンマ線を再構築する、ことを特徴とするガンマ線再構築方法。
- 前記コンプトン散乱用シンチレータの所定面に光学的に配列された複数の光量検出器を取り付け、該複数の光量検出器の光量分布から、ガンマ線の入射位置を演算する、ことを特徴とする請求項6に記載のガンマ線再構築方法。
