Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare a high-purity flame-retardant epoxy resin having excellent heat resistance and flame retardance, by using an amino compd. when a novolak resin is reacted with bromine or after the reaction and epoxidizing the brominated novolak resin obtd. CONSTITUTION:When a novolak resin of the formula (wherein R is H, CH3; n is an average value and 0-10) is brominated by reacting with bromine and the brominated novolak resin obtd. is reacted with epihalohydrin in the presence of an alkali to prepare a flame-retardant epoxy resin, the above described bromination reaction is carried out in the presence of an amino compd. (e.g., hydrazine, dimethylamine, or urea) and/or the product of the bromination reaction is treated with an amino compd. A high-purity and flame-retardant epoxy resin having excellent heat resistance and flame retardance and being especially suitable for a sealing resin for semiconductors is obtd. by using the brominated novolak resin thus obtd.
