Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the impact strength without detriment to the strength and thereby obtain the titled tough resin, by reacting at phenol resin with a reaction product between an epoxy compound and a carboxyl group-containing acrylonitrile/ butadiene liquid rubber.
CONSTITUTION: A carboxyl group-containing acrylonitrile/butadiene liquid rubber (A) is reacted with an epoxy compound or resin (B) at an epoxy/carboxyl ratio of 1W10. This product (5W50pts.wt.) is reacted with 100pts.wt. phenol resin to obtain a modified phenol resin. Thus, a liquid rubber-modified phenol resin is prepared which is useful as a molding material for improving the brittleness of phenol resin by heightening the impact strength without detriment to the strength. Here, liquid rubber A preferably has an acrylnitrile content of 5W50% and a carboxyl content of 1.7W2.5 per molecule, and compound or resin B preferably has 1.4W2.5 epoxy groups per molecule.
