Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent agglutination and abrasion and to keep steel wool from rusting by forming a calcium hydroxide coat through liquid thermosetting resin on a steel wool which is the main component of disc brake pad base material. CONSTITUTION:In case of base material of a disc brake pad, a steel wool l having a diameter of about 40-90mum and a length of about 2-4mm is soaked in a methanol solution of resol-type phenol resin and dried, and about 13wt.% calcium hydroxide powder 2 is forced to adhere thereto to form a coat. About 68wt.% steel wool is used as base material, and about 8wt.% phenol resin as a binder, about 4wt.% rubber dust 3 as friction and abrasion conditioner, about 4wt.% alumina and about 16wt.% graphite are added to the base material. The mixed raw material is heated and pressurized to form a brake pad. Thus, it is possible to prevent agglutination and abrasion caused by direct contact made between the steel wool and the disc rotor, and rusting of steel wool can be restrained to improve durability.
