Abstract

1445975 Friction materials IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 Aug 1973 [30 Aug 1972] 40189/72 Heading C3R A friction material in the form of a brake or clutch lining comprises a synthetic metal oxide fibre and a binder. Suitable fibres comprise thoria, urania, a rare earth metal oxide, yttria, titania, chromia, magnesia, zinc oxide, calcia or a double oxide of an alkaline earth metal oxide and alumina, zirconia or chromia or mixtures thereof. The binder is preferably organic, e.g. a natural or synthetic rubber or a thermosetting resin. It is preferably a phenolformaldehyde resin. Optional ingredients include lubricants, e.g. litharge, graphite or MOS 2 ; fillers, e.g. ground barytes, perlite, corundum, borax or clays; metals, e.g. Zn, Cu, Pb, Fe or brass in the form of wires, turnings or powders. The friction material normally comprises 15- 35% wt. binder, 40-85% wt. metal oxide fibre and 0À1-25% wt. of other ingredients. The metal oxide fibre preferably has an average diameter of 0À5 to 10 microns. In a preferred process for making the friction material the fibre is incorporated into the binder by a wet board process comprising dispersing the fibre, felting the dispersed fibres, saturating the felted fibres in a liquid binder, shaping and solidifying. In the examples friction materials are prepared from a phenolic resin dissolved in acetone and alumina or zirconia fibres both in the presence and absence of "PERLITE" (Registered Trade Mark) or kaolin as filler. After removal of the acetone the dry mix is compressed into a block and friction/wear tests carried out.
