Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules with high reliability and to improve a hydrophobicity as well by forming a polyimide layer, polyamide layer, polyamic acid layer, etc., on a substrate and projecting UV rays on the layers in an oxygen-free atmosphere then subjecting the surface to a rubbing treatment at the time of forming the oriented film of a liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION:The glass substrate on which patterned ITO films are formed is sufficiently cleaned and the polyimide resin layer or polyamic acid resin layer is provided thereon. The substrate formed in such a manner is then put into a nitrogen atmosphere or reduced pressure atmosphere and the UV rays from an external low-pressure mercury lamp are projected thereon. Some gaseous solvent such as normal methyl pyrrolidone is introduced into the reduce pressure atmosphere and after the layers are rubbed to 230 deg. helix angle, a panel is assembled. The display contrast is then extremely improved and the panel adequate for a large-capacity display is obtd.
