Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable the setting of a cursor automatically and at a high accuracy with a optical pulse tester, by determining a difference in a back scattered power between two positions with a section range of vtau/2 as obtained when an optical pulse is sent with a pulse width (tau). CONSTITUTION:First, a difference is determined between positions separated by + or -vtau/4 with a desired position (z) as center on a back scattered waveform. Then, it is judged how the difference value varies with respect to a distance. Then, when the difference varies in steps, the position separated by vtau/4 from a changing point zB is determined to be the position of a defect or an open end. When the difference value does not vary in steps, a position zB is determined at which the difference value reaches the max. or the min. within a distance section where the difference value exceeds a specified value. Moreover, the position closer to the incident end side by vtau/4 from the zp is determined to be the position of the defect. This permits an operator of an optical pulse tester to set a cursor automatically and accurately.
