Abstract

PURPOSE:To develop a sintered hard alloy for cutting tools having excellent chipping resistance and long life by subjecting a mixture composed of WC powder and B1 type hard powder to pressurized molding by using a binder such as Co, then sintering the molding and forming a specific hard film on the surface thereof. CONSTITUTION:The powder mixture composed of the hard WC powder and the B1 hard powder of carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides, etc., of group 4a, 5a, 6a metals of the periodic table as well as metal powder such as Co for binding at the time of sintering is prepd. The average grain size of the powder mixture in this case is 1.0-3.0mum and the B1 type hard powder occupies 5-15wt.% in the total hard powder; in addition, 30-70% of the hard WC powder is smaller than the average grain size of the B1 type hard powder. The sintered hard cutting tools having excellent toughness are produced by press-molding the powder mixture composed of 90-95% total hard particles and 5-10% binder such as Co to the shape of the cutting tools and sintering the moldings at 1,400-1,500 deg.C in a vacuum. The edge parts of such tools are coated with the hard film consisting of Al2O3, other metal carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides or diamond, etc., at 5-20mum thickness. The toughness of the sintered hard alloy is large and the service life of the cutting tools are extended by the sintered hard film on the surface thereof.
