Abstract

PURPOSE:To inexpensively obtain the titled material under relatively mild conditions by dispersing carbon fibers for reinforcement into the low moisture- content calcium silicate matrix formed by calcination of moldings consisting of specific components. CONSTITUTION:Auxiliary raw materials essentially consisting of the carbon fibers for reinforcement are added to a mixture composed of raw materials, lime and silica, and water is added to the mixture to prepare the slurry which is then dehydrated and molded. The resultant moldings are cured in a pressurized steam atmosphere to form the calcium silicate mainly consisting of tobermorite from the raw materials, lime and silica, by which the moldings are cured. The cured moldings are dried. The moldings are then calcined under the conditions under which at least part of the water of crystallization of calcium silicate can be removed but at least part of the carbon fibers can be left in the moldings. The material having the excellent performance is thereby obtd. inexpensively under relatively mild autoclave conditions.
