Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a defect in electrostatic charging of the entire area by forming a surface layer as a resistance layer and a dielectric layer at the part of a contact electrostatic charging member which abuts on a body to be charged electrostatically and making the reactance to an AC voltage smaller than the resistance. CONSTITUTION:The surface layer 2C which becomes the resistance layer and dielectric layer is formed at the part of the contact electrostatic charging member and the contact electrostatic charging member 2 is given a resistance component and an electrostatic capacity component. Then the resistance is large enough not to cause a voltage drop due to a leak even if the body to be charged electrostatically has a pinhole, the electrostatic capacity is much larger than the electrostatic capacity of the body 1 to be charged electrostatically, and the reactance of the contact charging member 2 to the AC voltage VAC is much lower than the resistance of the contact charging member 2. Consequently, even if the body 1 to be charged has a pinhole, etc., the voltage drop across a feeding part due to the leak is precluded and a defect in electrostatic charging is precluded over the entire area where the contact charging member contacts the body.
