Abstract
PURPOSE:To suppress the generation of knocking by determining the correction value of the base compression ratio or the correction value of the compression ratio switching operation condition which is previously determined according to the operation condition according to the frequency of generation of knocking and controlling the compression ratio according to the correction value. CONSTITUTION:In an internal combustion engine 1 equipped with a compression ratio varying mechanism 2 which varies the compression ratio by varying the relative position of a piston for a connecting rod, a knocking detecting means 3 for detecting the generation of knocking is installed. The detection signal of the detecting means 3 is inputted into a correction value setting means 4, and the correction value of the base compression ratio or the correction value of the compression ratio switching operation condition which is previously determined according to the operation condition is determined according to the frequency of generation of knocking, and the correction value is memory-held in a memory holding means 5.
