Abstract
PURPOSE: To melt a large quantity of a high purity high activity metal easily through a simple structure by forming an inner crucible of a material nonreactive to a high activity metal such as graphite, and forming an outer crucible of an electrically and thermally insulating material. CONSTITUTION: Heat is applied significantly to a crucible 3 during arc melting but since the crucible 3 comprises an inner crucible 3A formed of a material nonreactive to a high activity metal such as graphite, and an outer crucible 3B formed of an electrically and thermally insulating material such as magnesia or alumina, and water cooling is not employed, arc is not discharged to the insulating outer crucible 3B but discharged well between an electrode 4 and a high activity metal. Furthermore, heat is insulated well by the outer crucible 3B and a required quantity of molten metal 6 can be obtained in a short time at high thermal efficiency. The inner crucible is simply required to be nested in the outer crucible and the crucible 3 can be produced easily.
