Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the melting yield and the energy efficiency by melting high grade metal in a water cooled crucible set in a plasma arc skull furnace in an inert atmosphere under prescribed melting conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A water cooled crucible 3 connected to the DC anode side of a tightly sealed container 1 is set in the container 1, and a plasma torch 5 connected to the cathode side is placed at an upper part of the crucible 3. Metal as starting material is put in the crucible 3 in the plasma arc skull furnace having said structure so that it contacts with the crucible will at 20W90% rate. The metal is then melted in an inert gaseous atmosphere under conditions which establish a relative equation P=A×D (where A is a constant of 0.6W1.5) between the diameter D(mm) of the crucible and the power P(kw) of plsma and adjust the length of plasma arc 11 from the tip of the torch 5 to the surface of molten metal 10 in the crucible 3 to 30W200mm.
