Abstract

PURPOSE:To product (R)-(+)-gamma-butyrolactone-gamma-3-propionic acid in high yield and in high optical purity, by hydrolyzing a corresponding ester by using a specific bacterium. CONSTITUTION:An (R)-(+)-gamma-butyrolactone-gamma-3-propionic acid ester shown by formula I (R 1-4C alkyl except t-butyl) is treated with a bacterium selected from the group consisting of Chromobacterium, Flavobacterium, Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Corynebacterium such as culture mixture of Pseudomonas diminuta IFO13181, a culture cell thereof or pig lever esterase at pH 5-7 at about 20-50 deg.C for about 1-200hr to give (R)-(+)-gamma-butyrolactone-gamma-3-propionic acid shown by formula II.
