Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an optically active caboxylic acid ester and an optically active carboxylic acid from an dl-carboxylic acid ester, biochemically, by using an esterase produced by microorganisms.
CONSTITUTION: A dl-carboxylic acid ester of formula R1-COOR2[R1 is 2,5- cycloheptadienyl, 2-(1-butenyl)-3-cyclopentenyl, or 2-vinylcyclopropyl; R2 is lower alkyl]is treated, preferably at 25W40°C and about 7 pH, with the cultivation product or its treated product of microorganisms capable of producing an esterase which hydrolyzes only one of the d- or l-isomer of the dl-carboxylic acid ester. Only one of the d- or l-isomer is hydrolyzed by this process.
