Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a composition for paper coating having excellent luster, bond strength and rigidity by making the composition include a core/shell type copolymer latex composed of a core part having a specific glass transition temperature, gel content and an average particle diameter and a shell part having a specific glass transition temperature. CONSTITUTION: A part of a monomer mixture comprising 20-60 wt.% of an aliphatic conjugated diene-based monomer (1,3-butadiene, or the like) and 40-80 wt.% of another copolymerizable monomer is subjected to emulsion polymerization in an aqueous medium to form a copolymer of a core part having 30-80 deg.C glass transition temperature, >=10 wt.% gel content and 0.05-0.3 μm average particle diameter. The copolymer as a seed particle is mixed with the rest of the monomer mixture, which is polymerized and a copolymer of a shell part having -60 to +20 deg.C glass transition temperature is formed to give a core/shell type copolymer latex (the amount of the core part is >=5 and <30 wt.%, the gel content is 20-95 wt.% and the average particle diameter is 0.07-0.4 μm) as a pigment binder.
