Abstract

TITANIUM DIOXIDE PIGMENT PARTICLES ARE DISPERSED IN AN AQUEOUS MEDIUM. A SELECTED, RELATIVELY HARD, POLYMERIC LATEX IS ADDED, AS WELL AS A FILM-FORMING BINDER TO GIVE A FORMULATED COATING COMPOSITION. THE SELECTED POLYMERIC LATEX CAN INCLUDE RESIDUES OF POLYMERIZED DIHYDROGEN PHOSPHATE FUNCTIONAL GROUPS, OR HAVE A HIGH LEVEL OF ACID FUNCTIONAL GROUPS OR GREATER THAN ONE PERCENT ITACONIC ACID. THE SELECTED PARTICLES IMPROVE THE OPACITY OF THE COATING FILM. ALTERNATIVELY, A SINGLE SELECTED POLYMERIC LATEX IS USED TO BOTH IMPROVE OPACITY AND TO SERVE AS BINDER, OR A MIXTURE OF A SELECTED POLYMERIC LATEX HAVING A LOW EFFECTIVE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE AND A CONVENTIONAL BINDER LATEX IS EMPLOYED.
