Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable low-energy optical writing and to speed up writing by using a p type smectic liquid crystal contg. an additive for generating dynamic scattering. CONSTITUTION:The p type smectic liquid crystal 201 added with the additive for dynamic scattering (e.g.: quaternary ammonium salt of carboxylic acid) is sealed between two sheets of transparent substrates 105 provided with transparent electrodes 104. A photoconductor layer 101 and a photosepn. mirror 102 are laminated on one electrode. a dichromatic dye 502 is preferably added into the liquid crystal. The dynamic scattering state is maintained even after removal of a relatively high voltage of a low frequency and an erasing state is obtd. if said voltage is impressed between the electrodes by a driving power supply 107. The liquid crystal molecules in a region 501 irradiated with writing light 108 are arrayed when the voltage of the frequency to obviate the generation of the scattering is impressed between the electrodes. This display state is maintained even after the impressed voltage is decreased to zero.
