Abstract
PURPOSE: To make it possible to apply a phase-transition type liquid-crystal display unit for an electronic desk calculator, wrist watch, etc., by reducing its power consumption by making a voltage applied for maintaining display lower than an impressed voltage at the time of the display.
CONSTITUTION: To carry out display by using a mixed liquid crystal of a P-type nematic liquid crystal and a cholesteric liquid crystal or chiral nematic liquid crystal and by utilizing the phase transition between a focal conic state (F state) and a transparent nematic state (N state), a high voltage is applied in order to obtain rapid response of display (erasing or write) from the F state to the N state, thereby obtaining the transparent state. Then, a lower voltage but is above a transition voltage from the N state to the F state is applied, thereby maintaining a transparent erasing or writing state. In this method, the power consumption can be lessened in comparison with continuous application of a high voltage, applied at the initial state, even for maintaining the display.
