Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently produce a phenethyl alcohol derivative useful as an intermediate of medicines, liquid crystal materials, etc., by asymmetrically hydrolyzing specific dl-esters by the use of a special esterase. CONSTITUTION:dl-Esters of formula I (R' and R'' are lower alkyl) are asymmetrically hydrolyzed with an esterase having an ability of hydrolyzing either of the ester enantiomers to give an optically active phenethyl alcohol derivative of formula II (R is -H or -COR''; * is asymmetrical carbon). The esterase is preferably a lipase produced by microorganisms belonging to genus Pseudomonas or Arthrobacter because the lipase provides a relatively high optical purity for the derivative of formula II.
