Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide a high-density magnetic recording medium which is provided with C/N and durability in combination by using an oxide of a ferromagnetic metal to constitute the front side and base side of a surface nonmagnetic layer consisting of the columnar particles obtd. by diagonal vapor deposition and using an oxide contg. additive elements to constitute the intermediate thereof. CONSTITUTION:A fine particle coating layer 2 is formed on a high-polymer film 1 and the surface oxide layer 3 consisting of the columnar particles obtd. by the diagonal vapor deposition is formed by an electron beam vapor deposition method thereon. The surface oxide layer 4 of the columnar particles 3 consist of the oxide of the ferromagnetic metal and the side face oxide layer 5 consists of the oxide contg. the additive elements. The base oxide layer 6 is of the same compsn. as the compsn. of the surface oxide layer 4. The side in sliding contact with a magnetic head is the oxide of the ferromagnetic metal having defects and is hard and, therefore, said side is durable. On the other hand, the oxide of the additive elements forming the side faces of the particles required to improve the magnetic sepn. between the particles has density and, therefore both the C/N and durability are improved.
