Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a vertical magnetic recording medium having an excellent record/reproduction efficiency and high corrosion resistance, by increasing the Cr/Co ratio toward the surface of a magnetic layer for a magnetic recording substance that is obtained by forming a magnetic layer composed mainly of Co and Cr. CONSTITUTION:For a magnetic recording medium obtained by forming the Co-Cr sputtered film (magnetic layer) 14 on the nonmagnetic substrate 2, a vertical magnetized film is formed in case the Cr content in the magnetic layer is within a range of about 10-25wt%. The more the Cr content the more excellent the corrosion resistance, but the record/reproduction efficiency is lowered since the magnetization by saturation is decreased. Thus the Cr content is decreased in the above-mentioned range at the area near the interface 16 between the magnetic layer 14 and the substrate 2 and increased near the surface of the layer 14, respectively. In such way, a magnetic recording medium can be obtained with an excellent record/reproduction efficiency (to be affected by the whole Cr content of the layer 14) and a high corrosion resistance (to be affected by the Cr content in the surface 15 of layer 14), respectively.
