Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily obtain the title high-tensile steel without stress corrosion cracking and capable of withstanding severe bending by changing only the surface layer of the steel consisting essentially of bainite to ferrite structure. CONSTITUTION:When a low-carbon steel or a low-carbon low alloy steel is hot-rolled and the hot rolling temp. is controlled to a temp. higher than the Ar3 point, the steel is worked in the uncrystallized austenite region and then immediately quenched. As a result, the structure of the steel is changed to a structure consisting essentially of bainite or of bainite plus martensite. The strains more than the transformation strains and thermal strains are left on the steel surface layer in this way, and then the steel is annealed at a temp. lower than the Ac1 point, and/or stress-relieved. By this method, only the structure of the steel surface is changed to ferrite. consequently, a high-tensile steel without stress corrosion cracking, capable of withstanding severe bending, and having >=60kgf/mm<2> tensile strength is obtained.
