Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a medium having excellent durability, traveling property and head damage characteristic by forming a thin ferromagnetic film onto a plastic substrate which has discontinuous films of a specific height on the surface of a plastic film and filler projections projecting thereon, then removing a part of the projections on the surface thereof. CONSTITUTION:The thin ferromagnetic film is formed by vapor deposition, sputtering, etc., on the plastic substrate 10 which has the discontinuous films 11 of 50-400Angstrom height on the surface and has further the peak-shaped projections 12 projecting thereon. The surface on the thin ferromagnetic film side of the magnetic recording medium 2 formed in such a manner is subjected to a burnishing treatment by, for example, a burnishing tape 6 and rotary cemented carbide blades 9a, 9b in the process of being sent from an un-coiling side reel 1 to a coiling side reel 5. The durability to withstand repeated uses and the traveling property as a magnetic tape are thereby improved and the damage of the head by the medium is lessened.
