Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve a magnetic recording medium excellent in the performance of short wave recording and anticorrosion, by forming a magnetic substance layer consisting of Co-Cr or Co-Cr-Ni on a nonmagnetic substance substrate and segregating Cr on the surface of pillar-shaped crystal of this magnetic substance layer. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic substance layer 12 is formed with vacuum deposition, it takes Co and Cr, or Co, Cr and Ni as major component and consists of a pillar-shaped crystal, several 100Angstrom in diameter. The crystal 13 is covered with a layer 14 segregating Cr. With this construction, since the surface of pillar- shaped crystal is covered with a fine inoperative layer due to effect of Cr, far better anticorrosion can be achieved, in comparison with the countermeasures of anticorrosion conventionally such as over coating and forming of inactive layer on the surface of magnetic substance layer. Even if water vapor enters holes 11 and condenses dew, since the surface of pillar-shaped crystal is covered with the inactive layer, almost no corrosion is caused.
