Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the thickness of a protective film and to decrease spacing loss by using oxygen and fluorine-contg. gas as the discharge gas to form the oxide of a Co alloy as the protective film on a thin ferromagnetic metallic film consisting of the Co alloy. CONSTITUTION:The Co alloy oxide of a Co alloy oxide target 20 is vacuum- deposited by a 2nd magnetic field generator 21 on the thin ferromagnetic metallic film 2 on a high-polymer film 1 on which the thin ferromagnetic metallic film 2 consisting of the Co alloy is formed to form the protective film 3 on the thin ferromagnetic metallic film 2 at the time when the above-mentioned high-polymer film 1 is wound on the 2nd rotary support 18 and is moved. The oxygen and fluorine-contg. gas are introduced from a 2nd gas introducing port 11 into a protective film forming chamber 7 so that active fluorine is taken into the surface of the protective film 3. Since the cohesion among the metals is thereby hardly generated even where humidity is low, the thickness of the protective film 3 is reduced and the spacing loss is decreased.
