Abstract

PURPOSE:To extremely reduce the amount of tricarboxylic acid blended and to obtain the titled compound useful as a monomer for producing an aromatic polyimide having high molecular weight, by subjecting a biphenyltetracarboxylic acid to heating operation including dehydrating process and simultaneously bringing the biphenyltetracarboxylic acid into contact with an inert gas. CONSTITUTION:A biphenyltetracarboxylic acid such as 3, 3',4,4'-biphenyltetra carboxylic acid is heat-treated under normal pressure or under reduced pressure at >=250 deg.C dehydrating temperature at least 6hr and made into acid anhydride to give a reaction mixture. An inert gas such as N2 having 2-20Nm<2> flow rate based on 1m<2> biphenyltetracarboxylic acid of raw material is brought into contact with the reaction mixture, the contacted inert gas is exhausted from the reaction system by using a drain system under heating at 200-350 deg.C and the aimed compound is obtained while removing biphenyltricarboxylic acid prepared as a by-product from the reaction mixture. When the aimed compound is copolymerized with an aromatic diamine, the viscosity of the polymerization reaction is raised to give an aromatic polyimide having high molecular weight.
