Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve discharge efficiency of a cell for a, wide range of discharge current, by providing a means for detecting discharge current of cell directly or indirectly and lowering over-discharge protection level according to increase of discharge current. CONSTITUTION:Discharge current of a cell 7 is detected through a current detector 8 and a current signal detected through a multiplier 14 is squared. Output from the multiplier 14 is averaged through a resistor 11 and a capacitor 13 so as to obtain a root mean square of current (I2). Terminal voltage VB of the cell 7 detected through a voltage detection circuit 9 and the root mean square (I2) are added and fed in the form of VB+k.I2 to a comparator 21 through resistors 16, 17 then compared with a voltage set through a variable resistor 20. Consequently, over-discharge protection level can be lowered in proportion to the square of discharge current and the cell can be discharged effectively, resulting in an effective over-discharge protection characteristic.
